Going to Los Angeles this weekend.

Any advice or must see places you can recommend?  It's just me and the hubby and we will be there for 4 days.  Our hotel is in Venice Beach.

Re: Going to Los Angeles this weekend.

  • Last time we were in LA, we visited the Griffith Observatory which was fun.  You always see it during aerial shots of LA on tv shows and movies so we thought it would be fun to check it out.  Beautiful drive up the Hollywood hills and a gorgeous view of the valley.  Also, prime location for shots of the Hollywood sign.  You can hike in that area too.

We also like to drive around on Mullholland drive, especially at night.  It winds around the Hollywood Hills and provides some amazing views of LA.

If you like to shop, I like to check out the designer consignment stores on Melrose.

  • Most of my recommendations are food related, and I've focused on the west side of town since that's where you are staying.

See if you can get in at the rooftop bar at Hotel Erwin on Venice Beach.  You can make reservations by calling them.  http://www.jdvhotels.com/dining/losangeles/high The rooftop bar has a great view of the ocean and the sunset, so see if you can get in around 7:30pm or so. They have great little couches, and if its cold they will bring you a blanket.  Afterward, you can go to dinner at Piccolo, which is about a 20 minute walk from Hotel Erwin along the water.  http://www.piccolovenice.com/ Fabulous italian food.  You need reservations there as well.  Gjelina is also an amazing restaurant, but its almost impossible to get into for dinner.  Brunch is much easier.  http://www.gjelina.com/

You can also go to the Santa Monica pier.  Play games at the arcade, have a drink at the Lobster restaurant at the base of the pier, have a great seafood lunch or dinner at BP Oysterette (no reservations) accross the street and down the block from the pier.  Rent bikes in Venice or Santa Monica, and ride along the bike path that follows the water.  Or go into Malibu, have a fancy lunch or dinner at Geoffrey's  (need reservations) or a casual lunch at Malibu Seafood (no reservations).  See if you can get into the Getty Villa on the PCH and check out the art and views.

Hope this helps.  Let me know if you want info on any other part of town.

  • The Warner Brothers Studio tour is a great tour. I would recommend driving up the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu, great views. Walking up Rodeo Dr is fun. Get a Stars Home Map and drive around to see the houses.

Have fun we love visiting LA!

  • By the way, not sure if you are a Real Housewives junky, but we ate at Sur last time we were in LA and LOVED it. We were pretty surprised. The atmoshere is fun and the food isn't expensive at all.
  • Thank you ladies so much.  I just wrote all of this down.  I am actually staying at Hotel Erwin, so I made reservations at their Rooftop restaurant for Friday at 6:00 PM.  I am going to look into the other restaurants mentioned in a few minutes.  HIking and bike riding are things that we love, so I will look into those activities as well.  I am really excited.  I have to give you all a trip review when I come back next week.

  • That's great about Hotel Erwin.  We've never stayed there, but it looks really cute.  There is very little food at the rooftop bar, so you may need to go to a regular restaurant for dinner afterwards, depending on how hungry you are.
  • Universal Studios is a fun day trip.  We actually went to a taping of the Price is Right the last time I was there and that was fun.  You have to get there no later than 3:00 A.M. though if you want to get a place in line and actually get in.
