Things that make me mad...
Re: Things that make me mad...
Not to be a contrarian, but ...
because he beat cancer the USADA should let him dope? Granted, it's a huge investigation and he hasn't been caught red-handed, but he doesn't get a free pass. I agree, cycling is one of the dirtiest sports out there when it comes to doping. And they're likely doing it to make an example out of somebody.
To me, his giving up looks more like an admission of guilt than somebody sick of fighting back.
Also, I have a problem with his personality. Cheat on your wife (who stuck by you while you battled cancer), then get with Sheryl Crow. Then break up with Sheryl Crow because you say she pressured you to have kids, then marry somebody else and have a kid with her. Seems like a douche.
Yes he's a phenomenal athlete, yes he's a hero to millions. But he's not above the law.
This. I couldn't agree more. I think that it doesn't matter what he has been through there are rules and he broke them. If he didn't break them then don't quit fighting to prove otherwise.
I definitely agree with a lot of this, but I am far from believing that his giving up looks more like an admission of guilt. He passed all the drug tests they made him take, and they continue to fight him year after year. I'd be sick of it too. Someone constantly doubting you and everything you've done? That's gotta get old and you have to just give in at some point. Like he said, people have decided if they think he cheated or not. He passed the tests they made him take - nothing else he can say or do is going to change (most) peoples minds.
I don't think he should get a free pass, but the fact that he passed the tests and is still expected to mount a huge defense to all these accusations really bothers me. ESPECIALLY with respect to everything he's been through and everything he had to overcome to get there in the first place. Its been years since he even rode - why are they still worried about this? Focus on the current dopers if you really care about the integrity of the sport.
I totally agree with hating on his personality - I'm not a fan of him as a person, but what he's overcome is an inspiration to a lot of people out there battling cancer, and I respect everything he does trying to promote cancer research.
I can see why the evidence points to believing him. But I, personally, am more inclined to side with this guy's column:

Small rant: I have a real problem with so many professional athletes, though. So many of them get too big for their britches. Kids, others idolize professional athletes, no matter what, though most athletes will say that it's unfair to include their actions off the field/court/bike/etc. But it's the nature of the beast. Look at Michael Jordan. Great athlete, arguably the best basketball player ever. Giant douche. Same with Tiger Woods: reclusive weirdo, giant douche. I really love sports. But sometimes I really hate the athletes.
Aw, thank you! That's me and my sisters. Don't know how I wasn't a redhead.
Agreed!

This is exactly how I feel. He's done so much for so many, and call me an idealist, but I think he's just tired of arguing. Yeah, it's possible that he doped, but I'm going to hold on hoping and believing that he didn't because literally not a single drop of it has been proven. There's so much good that he's done outside of all of this that is worth remembering.
