Tricare: Switching from Standard to Prime?

Hello everyone,

I currently have Standard but I want to switch over to Prime for obvious reasons. I was wondering how I do that. Do I just call Tricare and have them switch it for me or do I have to actually go somewhere to do some paperwork.  I'm new to the whole thing so any help would be great!

Have a wonderful week!

Re: Tricare: Switching from Standard to Prime?

  • I always find that things happen a lot faster when I do them in person, especially when it comes to the medical clinic on base. I would say to just go to the Tricare office and talk to them. You may need to bring your husband with you because sometimes they have to sign things to approve you changing things.
  • I'm brand new to the whole Tricare thing too.  I am currently on Standard because I wanted to see my own existing doctors, but I've heard that it's best to switch to Prime.  The only downfall for me is that I live 25 miles from the base and it would be kind of a pain to have to go there for all my initial medical care.  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

  • I will just go there on my day off and see what is going on. Hubby is on deployment so I may have to stay with Standard until he gets back. Thank you for your help.

I stayed with Standard because I wanted to see my own doctors too. But once I moved I figured I would just switch. Also, sometimes you don't have to go on base. If you live near a larger base there are usually smaller clinics around the area that you can go to once you go to prime. I would check into that before you keep going on and off base

  • When I switched, I did it over the phone. But I agree, going in person would have been a lot easier.
  • When I retired in June and out processed at Ft Knox they told me I would be on Prime.  Well, I live in MI and there are no active duty military bases here at all, so no big push on accepting tri-care patients.  The nearest Prime provider is 95 miles from my home.  I'll be stuck with Standard.
  • You have to formerly enroll into TRICARE Prime.  There is paperwork that you have to sign.  http://www.tricare.mil/mybenefit/ProfileFilter.do;jsessionid=Q2QSWYn6hhrh1SXDBTvH01507JJCRz3vHgzZlQnG5QVSXr3qpzyv!1658213750?puri=%2Fhome%2Foverview%2FLearnAboutPlansAndCosts%2FTRICAREPrime
