I know we have a lot of teachers on here and there were a few who were still subbing. Is anyone subbing this year? I'm still stuck with this. DH and I have discussed it and decided I pretty much have only one more year of subbing before I need to go find another career because teaching isn't working out. I wish full time jobs were easier to come by, or at least that they treated subs better around here (benefits, etc.).
Sorry this turned into a little of a vent. I'm just kind of down about not finding a full-time job for the second summer in a row.
Re: Anyone still subbing?
I subbed for the past two school years, after spending a year teaching part time. How many years have you been subbing?
We had decided I'd give subbing 3 years. The first year I didn't get many jobs and they were all in random schools (our local district has 20 something schools). Then last year I accepted a maternity leave, which lead to two more medical leaves at the same school and a paternity leave at another school in the same district. In June I was offered another (two!) maternity leave at the two schools, and was just hired on full time two weeks ago. If it wasn't for all my subbing I would not have gotten hired full time- our district primarily hires off of the sub list, but you have to be willing to put in the time on the sub list AND be willing to accept leave positions (there is no extra pay for covering a leave so a lot of people are not willing to take one. Those people are still subbing randomly this year.)
I have only been subbing 1 year, but have already done several mat/pat leaves and made lots of contacts. I had always heard that districts like to hire off the sub lists, but this isn't seeming like it's true. There were a few open positions this year and I didn't even get interviewed. In addition, they hired a teacher who had worked one year in another district. I'm just a little frustrated because I keep hearing that they "love hiring subs" and "you're a shoo-in!" and then nothing happens. I guess DH and I will re-evaluate in August 2013 and see if we think a full-time will happen with a 3rd year of subbing or not.
Congrats on your full-time position, though! I'm glad to hear of a success story. I'm fearful of getting the question, "why haven't you been hired in the last 2 -3 years?" at an interview. Don't want it to look bad that I have been subbing for several years.

Thanks! I'm certified in grades 7-12 social studies (probably the worst area for jobs, lol...all the coaches get in here). I've contemplated going to get a reading endorsement, but in Ohio, that involves classes which cost $. Maybe next year if I'm still not full time I'll take out those loans. :-)

I will say I had 3 interviews this summer, and not one asked my why I was subbing instead of teaching full time. And the nice thing about subbing is you get to see lots of different classrooms, activities and management styles so you will have lots of examples for answering interview questions.
