favorite camping recipes?

We're going car camping this weekend with a couple friends of ours and I get to be in charge of food!  :)   I love cooking, and I love planning and I love lists.. so, this is just awesome for me  :-P

I have a few ideas for meals, but I thought I'd see: what are y'alls favorite go-to camping recipes?!

We'll be able to build a camp fire, and we have a nice new camping stove, and two jet boils.

S'mores are already on the list ;)

Re: favorite camping recipes?

  • We'd call them pudgie pies around here.  Basically 2 pieces of bread & whatever fillings you want - I like making pizza ones!  But you can put apple pie filling, etc., pretty much whatever you want inside.  Easy & versatile, if you have the irons:

  • We do "foil dinners" all it is, is reynolds foil bags and you put in a hamburger pattie potatos already cut and carrots season it all up. Then fold the bags all closed and place almost on the fire. It takes about an hour or so to cook then remove them and open the foil and eat straight from there. I do recommend spraying the bag with pam first.

And then of course you always have the go to hot dogs on a stick and roasted.

  • Love foil dinners.  We use regular foil, and just wrap them up tightly.  I bet the bags hold more, though.

We make all sorts of different ones... chicken, pork, beef.. with lots of different veggies, but almost always potato chucks :) YUM!

We do these too, except we call them "Hobo Pies" and we put stuff like smoked sausage, potatoes, peppers, jalapenos, or other stir fry type things in there. The water that cooks off the sausage creates a steam bath for the stuff inside the foil to cook and It usually takes about 45 minutes (if you have potatoes) over a campfire to cook, but oh so worth it!!

  • back in the day when I was a girl scout we used to slice open bananas and fill them with chocolate, marshmallows, etc. and put them on the fire. They were SO good!

  • Honestly when we go camping we do a lot of improvising...whatever canned stuff is in our house and how can we use it...often ends up in chili to be used in sloppy joes.

Our staple camping meals though are sloppy joes, burgers, and usually try and bring a chicken or pasta dish....

We call them hobo pies in this neck of the woods but the same idea :)

Go buy a new rake and use it to cook your hot dogs on! It's easier than everyone trying to find a stick to use and you can cook multiple hot dogs at one time. Our camping food is never anything fancy - burgers, dogs, easy mac and hobo pies. I hate having to hual a bunch of stuff camping so the less stuff the better.

thanks, i'll have to check out those websites!

the banana/chocolate/marshmallow thing sounds pretty awesome too.  it reminds me of a campfire dessert i saw on pinterest: fill a premade icecream cone with chocolate chips, marshmallows, nuts, etc and wrap in foil, then heat it up over the hot coals.  anything with chocolate sounds good to me :-D

we actually have these marshmallow/hot dog telescoping sticks we got from REI, so we've got the stick thing covered, but the rake idea is a great idea for when there's more people, or if i want A LOT of marshmallows :-P

i was on the fence about the hobo dinner (tin foil packet thing) but i think we may go with that and do a fajita style chicken or steak.  that sounds good :)

we don't have the pie irons, so we'll have to file that one away for another time.

i found a recipe for corn muffins in a cooking light mag, so i may make a bunch of those and add bacon or something to have with breakfast.

thanks for all the fun ideas :)

You need to buy one, seriously. They're like $10 at Wal-Mart and worth it. You can make endless things, we've even done omelets in them before.

ETA: We call them "mountain pies", but I just saw a recipe for reubens and one for grilled cheese.

  • We made something (a stew? Chili? Can't remember exactly) in a pot.

[Sidenote: I kind of wish I would just leave that comment at that. FTW!!!]

Once everything was mixed in the pot and just needed to simmer over the fire, we put a layer of canned biscuits on top, put the lid on the pot, and just let it go until the biscuits were set. They "baked" on top, but the sides touching the liquid got sort of dumpling-y. It was by far the best thing we've made camping.

If you want the real recipe, let me know and I'll try to dig it up :)
