Name Change Gripes

So originally my husband and I went to the courthouse to file our marriage license and get our certified copies the monday after the wedding. Well, turns out our officiant screwed up on our license because he wrote over his address and so we had to wait for him to fax in a change request (he was on vacation in Missouri!!!). So I was all upset about that.

SO I had to mail in for our marriage certificates, which we just got today (1 week after that whole fiasco - ok no big). Well - now I thought YAY! I just got off work at 3 and figured I'd be able to run to the social security office and get my new social security card by 4pm and make it to the dmv by 4:30 to get my driver's license. NOPE. The social security office (which is a 20 min drive from my work) closes at THREE THIRTY. SO I have to hope and pray that i'll be able to make it there before close tomorrow after work - so I'm going to have to fly as soon as I get done at work! Then go make it to the DMV to get my new driver's license right afterwards (they close at 4) I'm going to see if my boss will let me out 30 minutes early and just make up the time later so I can get this stuff done. What a mess.

Re: Name Change Gripes

  • Ugh, it's such an annoying process.

  • Yeaaa That sounds annoying.

And just the list of places that need to know my new name is annoying. I'm up to 25 locations I need to contact. SS and DMV are done though!

  • Just so you know, SS office takes 24 hours to register the change in their system, so you're not likely to be able to do DMV and SS on the same day. My current state (California) e-verifies your SS, but even if then, it still needs to already be in the system first. And you have to do SS first.

  • When I went to the SS office they gave me a receipt that I was able to use to get my DL. I had no problems with getting both the same day - but now I gotta wait for the actual cards to arrive in the mail next week because they no longer print them on-site but send them from the capital of the state. :)
