Re: (Untitled)
I was a substitute teacher while I was taking night classes to get my teaching certification. My honest advice is that, unless you really want to be a teacher and are substituting to get experience/ foot in the door, or you love teaching but need the more flexible schedule that subbing will give you, it's not a good option.
It may work differently in different counties, but this was my experience: I had one training with the county that primarily focused on reporting suspected child abuse, how to pick up jobs over the phone system, and county policies on discipline and acceptable procedures. The real-life problems I often had as a substitute included:
-lesson plans weren't left or weren't enough work to cover the whole day
-some students had a behavior plan or learning accommodations under their IEP, and I needed to have the skills to implement those
-sometimes the teacher had been out for awhile under emergency circumstances, so the kids had had a revolving door of substitutes and were worried and missed their teacher
Stuff like that doesn't happen every time, but just keep in mind that when you're subbing, you never know what exactly you're walking into. When I was early in the teaching program and new to subbing, I wasn't a very good sub because I didn't have the teaching skills yet to handle different situations. Later on, when I was close to graduating with the teaching certificate, I was a good sub and I was requested often- because at that point I had the teaching skills I needed.
