Pregnancy 6 Days After Cycle Begins?

DH and I just got done having a 1 hour talk about babies and the menstrual cycle. This was initiated by my forgetting to bring my pills along with me last weekend when we had the hurricane. They were actually the first thing I packed, but last minute I switched purses and they didn't make it into the new purse. Today I am starting a new pill pack after having missed 2 pills at the end of my 3rd week on them for the month. I had my period and all was fine. The thing is we did it this weekend after my period ended without starting a new pack, I'll do that tonight.

The talk was about if I should start the new pack or wait for a month on the off chance that I could be pregnant. After DH and I watched a couple videos on the menstrual cycle we think we will be fine for me to start the new pills tonight. The videos mostly said the egg is not released until the 14th day of my cycle which would be Sept 9. So the chances of me getting pregnant 5 days after my cycle began are slim to none.

Does anyone know how soon after your period starts/ends you can get pregnant? Do you think we will be fine to start the new pill pack? What are the chances I could get pregnant this soon?

I plan on asking the pharmacist when we pick up my pills today to see what he says.

  • Usually birth control stays in your system 3-5 months after your last pill making it very hard for women to concieve after being on BC for a while. I'm sure people do get pregnant if they skip a few pills but it's higly unlikely. I'm sure you're fine.

  • Thanks Tara! DH and I talked about it again last night when he got home from work and we decided to wait for me to take the new pill pack. We are going to have me wait to take a pregnancy test on the very low chance that I could be pregnant. We'd rather be safe than sorry. In the meantime there'll be no hanky panky happening.

Actually this is incorrect. If you take a pill form of BC the hormones only stay in your sysyem for 24 to 48 hours, which is why they say to take them the same time everyday. It really is not uncommon for someone to get pregnant the month following stopping birth control. Megan, I wouldn't worry about getting pregnant after missing a few pills. It's unlikely (but possible) that you would ovulate 6 days after your period even if you were not on any birth control. I think youre in the clear!

  • Thanks! I talked to my cousin today who just found out she's pregnant a few weeks ago. She wasn't using any kind of birth control. Anyway, she told me she thinks they conceived a few days after her period ended. I know it's a long shot that we'll be pregnant. I still feel better waiting to take the new pill pack. We both really do want to get pregnant, but can't decide on the timing.

  • I would say that you should be fine, but I did read about women who ovulate early.  The standard ovulation time is 14 days after your cycle but there are some women who ovulate a lot earlier and a lot later.  That's part of what drove me crazy when I didn't know if I was pregnant.  I wasn't sure when I ovulated since I wasn't temping yet.

hopefully you find out soon.  :)
