I was curious how do others decide where to go on their next vacation?
Re: where to go?
Budget and how much time we have are the biggest factors for us. We decide what our budget will be and how much time we can take off work. Then we start throwing out places that we'd like to go. I usually research our top 3 or 4 and see what makes the most sense for time of year, cost, time we have there (factoring in travel time) and what we hope to get out of the particular trip (relaxing, sightseeing, etc). Then I show the info to DH and we make a decision together.
Other times, we have a list of places we want to go and we just decide if one of those will fit our situation at the time. For example we already know next June we are going to the Outer Banks...DH has been wanting to go back there for a while and it made the most sense for our next trip because we are going to be on a tight budget (I am taking a year off of work to stay home with DS) and we will have a less than 1 year old, so something low key that we don't need to make any kind of tight schedule/entrance times/etc made sense.
1. I have people I need to visit, a wedding to attend, etc.
2. I find a really good deal.
3. I look at my map of places I've been and look for trip ideas in a region that's still empty.
4. I look at the trips on the top of my wish list to see if anything fits the timing & budget I have to work with.
(I build my wish list from places I've seen in travel mags/blogs, places I've seen/heard about from other people's travels, and places that cater to one of my special interests [winemaking, volcanoes, narwhals, etc])
Well, my business and my husband's family take us to Morocco pretty much every year. I'm starting to squeeze in layovers in Europe on the way there or on the way home, though. (Last year was Madrid, this year it's Paris.)
Other than that - there are just countries that I've always wanted to visit and so we go! My problem is, I end up at the same place a few times if I really like it -- even when it's probably time to go somewhere new.
Other things factor in, too. Obvious things like price, weather and season.
If I had unlimited time and money I'd be traveling a lot more than we do. There are a lot of countries that I really need to visit sooner than later. I guess I have to keep working/dreaming.
