New Job....again?

I graduated from college in Dec 07 and since then I am on my 5th job, shortest was 8 months, longest was about 1.5 yrs. My question is...

I have been in my current position since June 2012 and I am debating on making a change again. In my current position, I feel that I don't have enough to do on a daily basis and it makes me question the stability of my position longterm. I have spoke to my director several times asking for more responsibility and projects, I have asked about my performance and potential avenues to expand my skills and he seems to be uncomfortable by all of it. At this point I don't know what to do because I feel like my resume is going to start looking like I cant sit still at a company but I really just want to find something I love. (btw, the only reason I left my last job was because my BF (now FI) and I were working together and we didn't want to hide our relationship any longer).

Any suggestions? Is it too soon to switch again?

  • So, about a job a year. First of all, congrats on finding so many jobs in such a terrible job market. Do you have a unique skill/field that makes it easy to land positions? It is possible that by the time you find a job you'll be at the six-month mark with this one.

    How is your current company doing financially? Are riffs expected in the near future? Sometimes it just takes time to develop into your role. While your director may feel it is soon to talk about job growth, have you made it clear how much free time you have? There are so many factors it's hard to give a definitive answer, but I'd suggest trying to stick it out at least a year. Also, vet your next job more carefully.

    I have made it clear that I am looking for additional tasks and responsibility. I have a BS in Marketing and have been working in the Logistics field since graduation so not unique skills but a different field than most look for.

    Another primary reason that I am looking is because of the fact that our company is not performing up to snuff anymore; i.e. we are still profitable but there are layoffs often at the MFG sites and we just had a round at corporate HQ also (which is where I work). I had done some research on this company prior to leaving my last position and it seemed like it would be a good fit and had a good reputation in the community but obviously things can look different when you are on the inside.

  • I agree with Munin, it doesn't sound like this job is a great fit long-term but I would try to stick it out a little longer. My rationale behind that is when you begin interviewing again you're going to start getting the question (if you haven't already) of why so much movement in such a short period of time? Companies tend to be hesitant to extend offers to candidates that they feel won't stick around for long, as they don't want to waste a ton of resources training you only to have you leave. I would anticipate that question and find a way to explain your past work history in a way that suggests you're looking for something more permanent in the future.

     That being said, also remember that no job is perfect and the grass is greener where you water it so I would look for ways to help out, learn more and improve yourself while you are still with this company. In my current job I've had to do a similar thing where I've taken the initiative to create projects and pushed to get myself involved in initiatives that someone at my level would normally never participate in, just so I could be busier and expand my knowledge base. This also ensures that when you are looking for your next opportunity you'll have some great experience to draw on and a stellar recommendation from your boss as a go-getter.
