Painting Furniture

We are moving into a new home and have been given an old desk. I'd like to paint it black and try to make the home office look a bit more modern.  I will also paint a bookcase black to so that it all coordinates.

Any advice on painting furniture?

Re: Painting Furniture

  • paint it in black color ? sounds a little strange ,I think you should consider of your room  interior decoration, you'd better post the desk picture ,then we can give you some advice

  • Black is color which is suitable to each and everything, you are saying that you want complete office look then you can try white also otherwise black is not bad idea.

  • Check out Pinterest, there is a ton of info on painting furniture on there.

  • I don't think it's that weird to want to paint it black.  I have a craigslist buffet table we painted black.  Looks awesome.  No regrets. I would look into using an oil based paint.  When I was at Home Depot looking at oil based paints, the person working told me "off the record" that Sherwin Williams has the best oil based paints around.  We used that on our buffet table and 4 years later, it looks great.  There's a ton of stuff on the interwebz about painting furniture.  You can simply ask the SW sales person about it too.  They'll know what to do, and what you need as far as paint and supplies.

  • I have black furniture in my house.

I think I've used this site in the past when painting. Though I was just talking to a woman tonight who does this alot (partially for a shop she's a partner in) and she was talking about Annie Sloan paint that didn't need primer (I've never heard of it before). Said it was expensive, but saved a lot of steps and she really liked it. Anything that saves time is plus in my book (I'm never painting a piece of furniture again, frankly).

What? Black is not a strange color for furniture. It is actually quite common in decorating, DIY or store bought items.

I agree with the other posts, check out pinterest and the recommended blogs for painting furniture. My only additional suggestion is to ask the store where you decide to get the paint if you need to do a poly coat over the paint. I've had issues in the past with things sticking to the paint, so I've put poly over it to alleviate this issue. I've never used oil based paint though. So, you might want to just double check.

  • I think black color is not a too good choice for painting a desk. If you want to put it in your office, you must get it painted in brown or some more natural color. You can choose a color that more resembles with the interior of the office.
