Re: College/education poll

  • I went to Stevenson University (then Villa Julie college) majoring in psychology. I do psych testing now, thanks to my masters degree that I got from Loyola University Maryland (then Loyola College). I think I'll go back for my Ph.D. at some point when I figure out when/what.

I am on Stevenson's alumni board so I go to A LOT of events (I plan them in fact)

College was such a busy lifestyle to me...I always worked full time and usually had another part time gig/internship going on too...staying up until 4 am doing papers, getting a decent amount of partying in (though very atypical to what people usually talk about when living in dorms). So I guess that's all my favorite/least favorite thing all together...it was hectic but I thrived!

  • Did you go to college/university? Yes If so, which one? Community College first and then Marymount University

What did you major in? Politics and history

Do you work in the field you majored in? Yes

Did you go to grad school / Do you ever think you'll go back to school? No

Are you still affiliated with your school via alumni association or even just rooting on sports?  No

What was your favorite thing about being in college? Freedom, lack of responsibilities, lots of vacation time

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college?  Studying

  • Did you go to college/university? If so, which one? I went to the University of Maryland

What did you major in? Communication

Do you work in the field you majored in? Kinda. I started working on campus doing communications, but it morphed into what I do now.

Did you go to grad school / Do you ever think you'll go back to school? I will finish my Masters in Higher Education next year!!

Are you still affiliated with your school via alumni association or even just rooting on sports?   I am a member of the Terrapin Club, at UMD. We also have season tickets to football and we might get basketball tickets this year too.

What was your favorite thing about being in college?  I loved everything about college. I guess that's why I work for one :)

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college?  I don't think there was a least favorite thing, but a thing I wish I had done in college is study abroad.

  • Did you go to college/university? If so, which one? Penn State

What did you major in? Journalism

Do you work in the field you majored in? Yes, I work for a magazine

Did you go to grad school / Do you ever think you'll go back to school? No grad school (it's not needed this field), but I'm considering getting a personal trainer certification from AACC so I can 1) teach group exercise classes, and 2) have a more solid health background to propel a health-writing career.

Are you still affiliated with your schoo l via alumni association or even just rooting on sports?   I'm on the board of the local alumni association, so I'm pretty involved locally.

What was your favorite thing about being in college?  The ability to skip classes if I felt like it. General lack of responsibility!

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college?   I had a lot of social anxiety at the time (which I've mostly grown out of), but it was difficult for me to make friends.

  • Did you go to college/university? If so, which one? Several, lol. University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, Howard CC, CC Baltimore County, and I graduated from UMBC.

What did you major in? Nursing at first, then IFSM (Information Systems) at UMBC.

Do you work in the field you majored in? Yes.

Did you go to grad school / Do you ever think you'll go back to school? I did not go to grad school and no, I probably won't. It would be nice to have a Masters, but it's not a priority at this point.

Are you still affiliated with your school via alumni association or even just rooting on sports? No. UMBC isn't too big with the sports :)

What was your favorite thing about being in college? I met some good friends my junior and senior (and super senior) years.

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college? Mostly everything. I did not have a good time in college. My freshman year was miserable and so I came home. Then I bounced around for a few years and finally ended up at UMBC. I liked it there because it was a commuter school and I could come home. I wish I had had a better experience. A big state school like Pitt would have been a great fit for me but I was homesick and not good at making friends. I'm a little envious of those who loved college and still are into college sports.

Random fun fact: DH and I lived in the same UMBC apartment. We would have been next door neighbors, but we were there 4 years apart :)

  • Did you go to college/university? If so, which one? 1.5 years at Berry College in Georgia, 1 year at AACC, finally graduated from UMBC.

What did you major in? Cultural Anthropology with a minor in Spanish.

Do you work in the field you majored in? Nope

Did you go to grad school / Do you ever think you'll go back to school? I would give anything to go to grad school.  Not for professional reasons, I just love learning!

Are you still affiliated with your school via alumni association or even just rooting on sports?  No.  DH and I attended a few events together but nothing regularly.

What was your favorite thing about being in college? I loved my major so every class was exciting.   I was able to study abroad, I met some lifelong friends, and I had some good life experiences. DH and I took a Korean class together at UMBC which was a lot of fun.

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college?  Working full-time for the duration.  On the bright side, I never had to take out a student loan.  My biggest regret is not doing an internship.

  • Did you go to college/university? If so, which one? Yes, College of Notre Dame

What did you major in? double in Psych and Criminology, minor Sociology

Do you work in the field you majored in?  Kind of

Did you go to grad school / Do you ever think you'll go back to school?  Yes, Catholic University, I finished half of the credits I needed for a MA in Soc.  I would love to finish, but the university lost the PhD program in Soc when I began and it cut funding for many of the classes so there weren't many that I could take that weren't during core working hours.  At my old job, my schedule was really flexible and I could take a 1pm/10am class and just arrange my time around that, but once I took my current job I couldn't.  Now with kids, it probably wont happen in the next few years, but hopefully I can figure a way out to finish.

Are you still affiliated with your school via alumni association or even just rooting on sports?  Not really.  I played soccer for 2 years and one of my good friends is now the head coach and assistant athletic director so I'll probably get more into it now, but more to support her.

What was your favorite thing about being in college? I don't think it could be just one, it was the whole experience.  I don't think I ever found my "niche" in high school, but I really felt like I was in my element in college.  I did so much better in college than I did in HS.

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college? having student loans at the end!  I really loved college, it's part of the reason I went back for my MA.

  • Did you go to college/university? If so, which one?  I went to a liberal arts college in PA.

What did you major in?  government

Do you work in the field you majored in?  yes

Did you go to grad school / Do you ever think you'll go back to school?  I have a master's in public policy.  I don't think that I'll go back, but if I do, it will be for a PhD in poli-sci so that I can teach.

Are you still affiliated with your school via alumni association or even just rooting on sports?  I go to reunions and I've been to some alumni events, but not in a while.  I have the intention to start going to events again.  I'm still in frequent contact with my circle of college friends.

What was your favorite thing about being in college?  My friends- definitely my friends.  I was lucky enough to hit it off with my freshman year roomate on day 1, plus our neighbor, and they're still 2 of my best friends.  Like I said above, I still keep in touch with my larger circle of friends but they all live in different states.  We had some pretty fun times together Devil

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college?  Nothing?  I absolutely loved my college experience!  If I have to answer something, Sept 11th comes to mind.

  • Did you go to college/university? If so, which one?  I started at Villa Julie and hated it because it was so small, then I went to CCBC for a year until I figured out if I wanted to stay in state or not, and then I transferred to Towson and finished

What did you major in?  Health Care management with a minor in Business

Do you work in the field you majored in?  yes

Did you go to grad school / Do you ever think you'll go back to school?  I have not gone to grad school yet and it's not within the 5 year plan right now, but I do think that I'll eventually go back and either get my MBA or a Master's of Public Health.  Or...I'll go back and get a bachelor's in nursing.  I think I'd really like that..

Are you still affiliated with your school via alumni association or even just rooting on sports?  Uh, no.  I worked full time while going to school full time so I didn't really have the same college experience that most have.  When I wasn't working or studying, I was hanging out with friends who were slightly older and out of the college scene but still out having fun.

What was your favorite thing about being in college?  This sounds odd but probably that college came easy for me.  I was already working in the field that I was majoring in so I had a lot of the knowledge that I needed when it came to exams and papers.  I never really felt like I had to try.

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college?  Picking my first school and it being a total flop for me.  I wasn't challenged, I thought I wanted to be an ElEd major, the school was too small, and I just was miserable.

Are you still affiliated with your school via alumni association or even just rooting on sports?  No, but I always get tons of news from the school and asking for donations.

What was your favorite thing about being in college? I went to UMBC to save my parents $, I liked that it was a commuter school and I went full time and working part time.

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college?  But I never got to really have the full college experience, living on campus, etc. I just went to class, studied and graduated.

Do you work in the field you majored in? Yes

Did you go to grad school / Do you ever think you'll go back to school? I went back to school with intentions of eventually getting a Masters, but ended up with another Bachelors in Accounting. Go figure.

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college?  All the work!

  • I did not attend college. I am guessing I will be one of the only ones on here who did not go.
  • Did you go to college/university? If so, which one?  Columbia University

What did you major in?  Political Science with a focus on comparative politics and a minor in Japanese

Do you work in the field you majored in?  Not really - though it does come in handy

Did you go to grad school / Do you ever think you'll go back to school?  I went to Harvard Law.  Would love to have the time to go back to school if only to take a few classes here and there to indulge my hobbies - but that's laughable at the moment given my schedule.

Are you still affiliated with your school via alumni association or even just rooting on sports?  No real continuing affiliation with Columbia.  It's a wonderful school but the social life is very NY-centric rather than college-centric, so I think it's common not to end up with a huge amount of school spirit and loyalty.  You can never get away from Harvard, though.  I'm still very much affiliated (though not so much for the sports ;).

What was your favorite thing about being in college?  I loved being in New York and surrounded by such an amazing group of people - both professors and students.  I could do things like cry over Aristotle without anyone thinking it was strange - which, embarrassingly enough, suited my 19-year-old self very well.

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college? In hindsight, what I mentioned above about the NY-centric-ness.  At the time it was what I wanted - but looking back I'm sometimes jealous of people who left college with lifelong school spirit.

Are you still affiliated with your school via alumni association or even just rooting on sports?  Not really, just get the newsletters.

What was your favorite thing about being in college? Loved the start of every school year, moving into new places and getting all your books and supplies. Loved the independence, scheduling my classes my last semester to have Fridays off, loved being 30 minutes from the beach and just picking up and taking impromptu trips to Assateague. Going to Pickles and the Flying Club and just not really having a care in the world....gosh I really miss college.

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college? I lived on campus my first year and really didn't enjoy it....the girls in my cluster were just nasty b!tches and we had to share a bathroom with them and it was so annoying.  had a much better time the next 3 years living off campus. also, being a science major I had buttloads of lab classes.....4 hours a week in addition to the regular lecture. total time suck.

Not really, but it is a good foundation for working in a burocracy.

Did you go to grad school / Do you ever think you'll go back to school?

No.  I chickened out of taking the LSAT for fear that I wouldn't do well enough.  i was suppossed to take a year off to study and then go back.  I never did.  I have been working for the federal government for 12 years.  I would still LOVE to go to law school but with 2 small kids that probably won't happen anytime soon.

Not as much as I would like.

What was your favorite thing about being in college?

I was only an hour away, and had a townhouse near school. So i had enough independence to feel "out on my own", but close enough that I could be a little dependent sometimes if i was feeling lazy or just wanted to come home to mom. . Huh?

What was your least-favorite thing about being in college?

my school gave semester long assignments that were due at the end and I'm a procrastinator so the last 2 weeks of each semester I was running around like a crazy person trying to do a semesters worth of work.

  • I went to Villa Julie College--now Stevenson U., but I will always say Villa Julie

    I majored in Elementary Education

    Absolutely!!  I am a 3rd grade teacher

I went to grad school and currently have my masters in Early Childhood Education.  I do plan on doing more courses, and then I will have 2 masters.  Second masters TBD.

Villa Julie College wasn't a big sports team college, I get newsletters about Alumni stuff, but not really involved.

I loved sitting on campus and learning (nerd alert).  I also loved the group of girls in my major...I wish we could have stayed connected after graduation.

My least favorite thing were the lack of men in my major..lol  I would have loved to said I met my boyfriend in college, while there were men, they were hard to meet being with girls all day.
