Let's talk moving to Baltimore...

What are some family-friendly, good schools, affordable neighborhoods in the Baltimore/Annapolis area?  Willing to go about 20 miles in radius, probably.  Would be looking for a home in the under 275k range (4 bed 2+ bath with basement and garage)

TIA!!  :-)

  • Welcome!

Not to burst your bubble, but you will most likely have a difficult time finding a 4 bedroom, 2+ bath with basement and garage house in Maryland, especially around the Annapolis areas.  I live in Northern Baltimore though, but there are several ladies that live around that area that will reply soon enough with their input.

    Good luck!

  • Ditto Jadey - it's going to be hard to find that much house under $275k. I live in Annapolis so I can't speak for the Baltimore area. You might luck out and find a foreclosure or short sale in that price range but it will likely need to be completely remodeled before you move in. Southern Anne Arundel County is usually more affordable and there are more houses in that price range but it is also a lot further from stores, job opportunities, etc...
  • Welcome! Where are you moving from?

I live in Crofton, which is a suburb in Anne Arundel County, very equidistant between Annapolis, DC, and Baltimore. Lots of ladies on this board live in this general area. I love it here. However, the PP is right -- real estate is very, very expensive here. I live in a tonwhome community, and 3 BR/2 BA townhomes without garages or basements go for about $230-240k.

You might be able to get more bang for your buck in the glen burnie/pasadena/baltimore areas, but you also might be trading lower housing prices for higher crime stats and not-as-good school districts.

I work in Annapolis, too, so if you have any questions about Anne Arundel County, please ask away!

  • Thanks.  Not sure if we're definitely moving- just doing some prelim research :-)

We would definitely want a suburban home (yard, etc)- nothing in the city.  As long as DH's commute to the Timonium area isn't more than 30ish minutes each way....

  • I think you could find something in Timonium/Cockeysville, also Parkville, Carney etc in that price range. And schools are pretty good there. My cousin has a cute house in Timonium and it was way less than my crappy townhouse in Crofton.

If your DH is working in Timonium I wouldn't go too far into AA County. Trust me-my DH works in Hunt Valley and we live in Crofton-its a hike!

    Also, maybe Catonsville or Sykesville.

  • Yeah, I second pp. If the goal is to be near work in Timonium, I'd say stick to Baltimore and northwards.  Annapolis and the surrounding areas would be a nasty commute.

  • Look at the map at this link: (Cites shown are the county seat for each county): http://www.msa.md.gov/msa/mdmanual/36loc/html/02maps/seatb.html

Timonium is just north of Towson in Baltimore County.  If you are wanting a suburban neighborhood and a commute 30 minute or less drive you definitely need to stay north of the city.  Look for places in Northern Baltimore County, Carroll County or Harford County.

Cities to check out Timonium, Lutherville, Towson, Parkville, Carney, Hampstead, Manchester, Upperco, Parkton, Monkton, Westminster.  If you are willing to have a bit longer of a commute: White Marsh, Rosedale, Middle River, Abingdon, Bel Air, Mt Airy. (Note, not all of these will be in your stated price range)

Depending on where you are moving from, Maryland has a relatively high cost of living.  However, like so many other places the real estate market is still depressed and you can find deals, especially in older neighboorhoods.  Parkville and Carney have tons of young families moving into those areas.  A lot of the houses are a bit older, but they have 4 - 5 bedrooms and a yard.
