We were looking at this house online, and love it: http://www.mouseonhouse.com/Property/630/20109/
The basement (pictured in link above) is unfinished, so I was wondering if anyone has experience finishing a basement and can give me ideas on the amount of work, time, cost, etc it takes to finish a basement. I am thinking, if you were to add walls, ceiling, and carpet to turn it into either a playroom or an entertaining den. Thanks!
Re: Finishing a Basement
Costs vary by area, materials used and if you are DIY.
You will need a building permit, an electrician, plumber and perhaps HVAC.
Insulation for the walls, new flooring in addition to the lumber and dry wall or wall finish of your choice. Basement windows - will they need to be replaced as well?
Get an estimate from a contractor.
We have spent a little over 20K and still have the bathroom to finish.
ETA: Remember in your figuring that you will need to furnish this space as well(another TV, sofa, area rug, lamps, storage etc. )
We bought a house with an unfished basement hoping to put a suite in. We gave ourselves 6 months and 20,000 to finish it. Now at 11 months later and closer to $30,000 sunk into it (doing it as cheap as possible, including doing most of the work ourselves)...it is almost done....but we haven't put the cabinates in yet..thats likely to be another 2-3,000.
As pp said it differs depending where you are/how cheap you can find things, but I would say expect it to take longer and expect it cost more then whatever you are told/or plan on!
