Re: A Poll About Houses
What is your favorite style of house (i.e. colonial, Mediterranean, rancher, etc)? I like traditional and craftsman, I could go with either one
Is there a style of house you don't like? I don't like split levels, I don't like walking into a house and having to make a decision right away, upstairs or downstairs??
What is your ideal size lot? I don't have a specific one, but the SFH's on the parkway (the older ones, not newer areas) are good for me. Close, but not too close to each other, and most have a decent sized backyard.
What are your favorite colors and finish materials for the exterior of the house? I don't have favorite colors because the colors depend on the material. I like brick and natural stone
Do you prefer one story or two? The floor plan matters most to me, I've seen floor plans for both one and two stories that I really like or hate. For me the placement of rooms and walls is more important
What are your favorite paint colors (interior)? In our house now, the larger rooms are all neutral, tans, light colors, so that it's easy to switch things up. But our bathrooms are pretty bold, one is a deep grassy green, the other deep blue, and the other cranberry red. I like bold colors, but I think the BR is a place that is easier to re-paint if you get sick of the color.
Are there any decorating or remodeling trends you aren't crazy about? It's not really a trend, but I can't stand when people don't use the proper scale in decorating. For example, you have these HUGE plush corner couches that take up 80% off the room, or you have this huge wall and you hang 3 or 4 tiny sconces across it. Scale in a room is important.
What would be on your Must Have list for a new house? We have played around with this A LOT recently, garage (space for at least one car, but also storage for outdoor toys, a work space for tools), 4 bedrooms, a master with adjoining bathroom, and reasonably updated. After totally gutting and speding so much $ on our current TH, only to have prices drop (and probably wont be able to get what we paid for the house, let alone all the $ we've put in) we want something that we can move into and feel comfortable. We have specific tatstes, so it's ok if something isn't really our taste, we can save up and change out countertops or light fixtures, but they have to be in good/newish condition. We thought we could live with our 50 year old cabinets for a few years, but once we moved in they smelled awful and we had to bump up or kitchen renno.
Describe your perfect backyard/outdoor living space. good sized patio (stone/pavers so they are less work than a deck) enough for a good sized table and chairs for our big families and space for a grill that is far enough away to not heat up the space in the summer, and a good sized yard for our dogs and kids, with a fence for the dogs.
What is your favorite style of house (i.e. colonial, Mediterranean, rancher, etc)? Don't really have a favorite.
Is there a style of house you don't like? I'm not a fan of colonials with boxed in rooms and a useless formal living room. I also don't really care for deck houses.
What is your ideal size lot? At least 1/2 an acre. Dream lot would be several acres.
What are your favorite colors and finish materials for the exterior of the house? I'm not a fan of all brick (like some siding in there) and while I like the look of cedar shakes, it's just too much upkeep.
Do you prefer one story or two? I like 2 so that we can spread out. Although I do really like our split level b/c the bedroom is a close walk to the kitchen. I can get there quickly if I want to change clothes while I'm cooking, grab a glass of water, etc...
What are your favorite paint colors (interior)? We like bold colors. Our bedrooms are very bright or dark blues and greens. Our kitchen is red. Our bathrooms and main living spaces are more neutral though.
Are there any decorating or remodeling trends you aren't crazy about? I don't really care for using two different colors in one room (i.e. two walls are one color and the other two walls are another color).
What would be on your Must Have list for a new house? Since we just rehabbed our whole house, the only things left on our dream list would be a garage and an indoor pool.
Describe your perfect backyard/outdoor living space. I love our backyard. We have a 1/2 acre and it's filled with gigantic trees. I love laying out in my hammock watching the birds. I just wish we could get grass to grow all over. It has several large bald spots. What is your favorite style of house (i.e. colonial, Mediterranean, rancher, etc)? Colonial
Is there a style of house you don't like? Not a big fan of ranches
What is your ideal size lot? I'm not sure on the exact size. I just don't want to be able to see into my neighbor's house from inside my house.
What are your favorite colors and finish materials for the exterior of the house? Neutrals. I really like stone.
Do you prefer one story or two? Two with a basement would be good.
What are your favorite paint colors (interior)? Neutrals - browns, grays, taupe with possibly some accent colors in the muted-red-orange-brown family.
Are there any decorating or remodeling trends you aren't crazy about? Probably. I can't really think of any. Oh, I'm not a big fan of the massive frame walls. I love hanging pictures but I don't want every inch of the wall covered in frames.
What would be on your Must Have list for a new house? At least 4 bedrooms, at least 2.5 baths, garage, front porch, large kitchen and overall "new". I know DH would prefer brand new construction.
Describe your perfect backyard/outdoor living space. Large deck with maybe part of it screened. Large backyard with plenty of space. Not too many trees because I suck at yard work.BFP#1: 01/10, M/C 6w -- BFP#2: 06/10, M/C 5w -- BFP#3: 09/10, DS born June 1, 2011

What is your favorite style of house (i.e. colonial, Mediterranean, rancher, etc)?
Growing up I always wanted a Victorian. They seemed so Fancy, and I wanted to live in the rounded tower room. These days, if we build a new house on our current property it will be an A Frame. It will fit in with the surroundings and take best advantage of the views behind our property.
Is there a style of house you don't like?
Split Level, it seems to break up the living spaces.
What is your ideal size lot?
1 acre, wooded.
What are your favorite colors and finish materials for the exterior of the house?
Natural matrerials.
Do you prefer one story or two?
Two
What are your favorite paint colors (interior)?
I don't really have a favorite. Right now we have a lot of Yellow, we are thinking about repainting and adding some green. I am not a big fan of blue.
Are there any decorating or remodeling trends you aren't crazy about?
Stainless Steel appliances. They look nice when they are clean, but they get dirty so easily!
What would be on your Must Have list for a new house?
Bigger closets/more storage! (houses built in the 1950's dont have much closet space.)
Describe your perfect backyard/outdoor living space.
As a family full a gingers, we need shade. I would love a big screened in porch or a gazebo.
What is your favorite style of house (i.e. colonial, Mediterranean, rancher, etc)? I love a wide variety of houses - craftsman, log "cabins", adobe/stucco, rambling farm houses... But I think my absolute favorites are Victorian homes. They have do much character.
Is there a style of house you don't like? Cape Cods and Split Foyers.
What is your ideal size lot? My dream lot is a multi, multi acre farm. More realistically, I'd like one acre.
What are your favorite colors and finish materials for the exterior of the house? I love gray stone house with black/white trim.
Do you prefer one story or two? Two but a full bath on the first floor is a must!! I'm praying my children don't inherit my family's knee problems but if they do, I don't want them to have to worry about stairs.
What are your favorite paint colors (interior)? DH thinks every room should be white which is ridiculous. I like a wide variety of colors - dark blue, red, sand, even gray.
Are there any decorating or remodeling trends you aren't crazy about? I hate super modern furniture that looks chic but is really uncomfortable.
What would be on your Must Have list for a new house? Move-in ready. I don't even want to paint! I'd love a garage and a big kitchen with an island for DH. A master bathroom with two sinks.
Describe your perfect backyard/outdoor living space. I want a farm (lots of land, a barn, etc) but they may or may not ever happen. I want a porch and/or deck and a fire pit.
What is your favorite style of house (i.e. colonial, Mediterranean, rancher, etc)? Not sure that I really have a favorite. I lean towards Tudors, Colonial, etc.
Is there a style of house you don't like? I don't care for split levels, or split foyers, whatever you call them.
What is your ideal size lot? I think the most would be an acre. I wouldn't want to mow the grass. Unless we had a big yard in order to have room for a lot of dogs. Or horses.
What are your favorite colors and finish materials for the exterior of the house? I love stone houses. And in neutral tones like grey or tan.
Do you prefer one story or two? Doesn't really matter.
What are your favorite paint colors (interior)? Neutrals and I decorate with color. That way we wouldn't have to repaint to change the feel of the room.
Are there any decorating or remodeling trends you aren't crazy about? I am not a fan of a LOT of contemporary stuff. Or modern (is that the same thing?). I am more of a classic person. Doesn't have to be antiques per say.
What would be on your Must Have list for a new house? At least 4 bedrooms, one for us. one for DD, one as a guest room and then one could be used as a play/toy room. A two car garage. A nice sized back yard. A quiet street.
Describe your perfect backyard/outdoor living space. Shade, fenced in yard for Jade, fireplace/pit, table and chairs, space to put a swingset for DD.
