Costa Rica hit by earthquake this morning...

Now on tsunami watch.  We are to travel there in November. YIKES! I hope that doesn't cause the volcano to begin to rumble....

Trip advisor forums - a guy is racing around checking on people's private condos to make sure they are okay - he posted that a bridge was down near the volcano and that it has been damaged.

  • The quake was 40km underground, so fortunately the damage was not what it otherwise would have been from a 7.6 magnitude quake.  Sadly two people died, including one from a heart attack. The tsunami warning has been cancelled, and things are reported to be slowly returning to normal. I would contact your resort directly as they'll have much more informaiton, but it sounds like it will be safe to go in Nov.
  • DH and I came back from CR yesterday night. We were there for both earthquakes! At the time of the 1st - the stronger one - we were staying right near Arenal. It shook quite a bit, but in our area, there was no major damage aside from some road blockage in a few places. The National Park where we planne to hike that day was closed by gov. orders for a couple of hours.

The second one - we were in a beach town Playa Hermosa - I didn't even feel! I was reading in a rocking chair when DH came out of the bathroom and asked whether I felt "that". I was like, felt what? LOL

I feel so grateful that we and the people around us were OK, and that our trip wasn't affected. The whole country seemed to take it extremely well.

Thanks for sharing your story, this is good information. Earthquakes are so scary!  Where did you stay on your trip?  What excursions did you do? I need to do more research and get those booked ASAP but I am so lazy.

Hi PuppyWuppy, We went for two weeks, flew in and out of Liberia, and visited five places: Rincon de la Vieja (Hacienda Guachipelin) - 3 nights; Bijagua (Sue?o Celeste B&B) - 2; Monteverde (Cala Lodge) - 3; La Fortuna/Arenal (Volcano Lodge) - 3; Playa Hermosa (Villa Belmar) - 3. I am totally proud of myself for planning this itinerary from A to Z :) Overall, we had possibly the most exciting vacation of our lives! We hiked, zip lined, swam in waterfalls, saw amazing wildlife, spelunked, and snorkeled. Didn't rent a car, used private or shared transfers. Spent a bit over $4K... Besides Tripadvisor and Frommer or Fodor books, I recommend using anywherecostarica.com and piravidaeh.com for planning your activities. Good luck!
