Survivor Benefit Plan for Reserve Component

This is a complicated question, and DH will be calling ARPC soon, but I am hoping one of you may know the answer.

DH divorced several years ago.At the time he was already at the 20 year mark in the military. He selected the Survivor plan for spouse when he hit the 20 year mark.

DH and I married last year and he retired in February of this year.

Will the coverage (I'm in DEERs) transfer to cover me once ARPC is updated w/ our marriage info?

Re: Survivor Benefit Plan for Reserve Component

  • What does it say in his divorce decree?  I found this on an attorney's website:

As the retiree can only have one beneficiary (except for children coverage, outlined in more detail below), one effect of court-ordered SBP coverage for a former spouse is that if the service member remarries, the new spouse or children are precluded from coverage."
