Things that drive me nuts!

People who complain ALL THE TIME about being broke but drop $5.00+ for cigarettes! Are you insane!? I work with a girl who just turned 30, Monday, and she just picked up smoking. She is recently divorced with an ex who isn't paying child support for their two girls and she complains about not having money. Grrr!

Re: Things that drive me nuts!

  • I know what you mean... i used to work at a department store that was geared towards lower income individuals.. they'd come in with welfare cheques to buy groceries and then pull out $20.00 to buy smokes... i'm like.. excuse me? If you can buy smokes then feed your freaking kid!!!

  • I hate when they have their welfare checks for food and debit cards for alcohol. It drives me nuts. I pay taxes so you can feed your kids. I get it, some people truly need assistance. Unfortunately, those people usually can't get the assistance.

  • I'm going to say something here just because I used to think the same way...after 2 years in social services, I'm starting to feel differently. I still think its unnessisary, but when you get to know some of these people...smoking/drinking/buying lotto, is thier only escape from a life that is freaking hard. For most its a stress reliever, so that they can make it through another week of hell, another week of not knowing if you have enough to eat, not knowing if you will have a roof over your head at the end of the month, maybe going home to a bf or husband who is emotionally or physically abusive, having children in foster care because of something your ex did, and then being judged every time you walk out the door by the general public for looking poor...or smoking.... Does spending money on smokes help...of course not..but is it fair to judge them for smoking (which may be thier only escape) when we have no idea the amount of stress they might be under?

If anything instead of judging, compliment them, talk to them....give them a moment in which life is just a little less bleak..maybe it will help them get through another hour without needing to turn to a vice as smoking/drinking/doing drugs....

If its your friends....suggest going to get a coffee at mcdonalds, or go for a walk with them after work to help them get away from things....

  • Oh i absolutely understand what you're saying and where you're coming from in that. I also agree with you. Sometimes that 5 minutes of positive interaction with someone can make their day! It's amazing what a smile from a cashier can do for a person.

It is frustrating as well though because while there are people out there legitimately struggling and having issues and crisises on a daily basis, there are a lot of people who just use the systems as well because they can.

  • I agree with you both. I really do. Sometimes, when you know so much and are understandably frustrated, that information just doesn't come across right. My mom quit smoking years ago and then picked it up when she was stressed to have something to do. I get just as frustrated when the young people in our office do it too. I feel bad for this girl, I understand her situation is frustrating, I just wish there was a better way for her to go about it. I tried talking to her about it, with 2 other people and she seemed all for us being right. She just hasn't followed through.

I am so positive for everyone. I work at a law firm that specializes in evictions and collections. I have made days with my sunny disposition and understanding. I just wish I could talk this one off the smokers ledge.

  • OP, I agree, I really hate when people complain about being poor and spend their money on stupid crap, I know we can't dictate how others spend their money, but damn people are really stupid with their money sometimes. This could also be because I am super frugal and spend lots of time thinking about expensive purchases.

MIL always complains about being poor, yet she has to have her DD coffee every single morning and goes on hour long joyrides for the heck of it.

  • I agree. It annoys me when someone complains that they have no money, etc to pay bills, but then they spend money on either stupid crap or expensive stuff. For example, H's cousin didn't have enough money for a deposit on an apartment he and his FI were getting. Mommy and daddy helped them out. They had to help him because he bought a $70,000 car. $70,000!! And he has never lived on his own before. Plus, the parents are paying for the wedding. I know we can't dictate how people spend their money, but honestly, don't complain you have no money for things, but you can buy a ridiculously expensive car because you're all about status.
