Short version: He's good! We have 3 more critical days of hoping for no seizures, but he's back at home and seems really, very, terribly happy to be here
Long version: Surgery went well. His shunted vessel was 12mm, which according to the surgeon is huge. He said that the bad vessel was actually larger than the real vessel that is supposed to be doing this particular blood pumping job. In the long run, it might mean a longer recovery, but otherwise it shouldn't affect anything. They were also able to take out a ton of gall & bladder stones, which all seem to be related to Milo having the shunt. Right now all of his levels are where they should be, and they think neurologically he's fine... He seemed a little off to me when I picked him up yesterday, but I really think the poor guy just needs some solid sleep and he'll be more himself.
Right now our biggest issue (besides hoping/ praying for no seizures) is he's got stitches running pretty much all the way down his underside, from just below his ribs down to his man parts. He hates his cone, which is too big for him to wear in his crate and he doesn't like not spending the night in his crate. We went to bed at midnight (we're catching up on Breaking Bad, and oh man- It's hard to stop watching to go to bed), and Milo was up at quarter til 5. 5AM. Like- I got 5 hours of sleep 5am. And once he was up, all he wanted to do was to sleep in his other bed near the couch, which he can't do with the cone on- So I've been up for almost 2 hours, watching him sleep and making sure he doesn't get any ideas about messing with his stitches.
So the last hurdles- Make it until Monday evening with no seizures. They could still happen after that, but the first 5 days are the most critical (aka the seizures would be fatal in the first 5, but possibly treatable after that). We have two visits with our family vet next week, just to make sure all of his vitals are what they should be. Then on 17th we get his stitches out. Then the week after that we get his bile acids checked to see if the shunt is being constricted properly. And then (if all is well) no more tests until 3 months after that.
So the end is kind of in sight. Just so glad and thankful to have him home where I can keep my own obsessive eyes on him and cater to his every whim
Thanks for the thoughts/ prayers, ladies!!!
Re: Milo Update!
He's on a 1/4 of a keppra pill 3 times a day- We were giving them to him about 2 weeks leading up to the surgery, too. I think the keppra and his pain pill in combination are contributing to his dopiness- The keppra on its own was only bringing him down a little bit, so I have to think the other pill is increasing his sedation.
And thank goodness for the sedation side affect kicking in- Otherwise my entire day would be trying to keep him from jumping and trying to scratch at his stitches
