So we have an open concept home, and I am kind of having a hard time deciding what to do with one wall in our living room. One wall in the living room is fully 2 stories tall, and besides for having 2 small windows it is plain.
It is just SO BIG I am not sure what to do with it. I recently saw a design show on HGTV where they stone mosaic'ed the entire wall, and it looked really cool...however, it would be a huge undertaking and probably pretty expensive. Most of the photos I see on Houzz, etc. show 2 story walls with more windows than we have or a tall fireplace. I really wish the builders would have put in another window or something, and I know we could still do it, but again that's a little more money than I'm really looking to spend at this point.
The room:

I kind of like the ideas of curtains like this, but there really isn't any window to frame...unless we framed a series of pieces of art and/or photographs that we hung in a vertical line on the wall:

I also came across this idea of hanging many small photos to cover an area. Downside would be that it would be a HUGE undertaking, almost as hard as doing a mosaic stone facade:

The other idea I had was maybe to have a large wallpaper or painted feature, like a tree:

Or I suppose I could just pretend the wall was normal wall height, decorate it as such, and just forget about all the empty space above it...
Any thoughts/ideas?
Re: Design ideas?
I just had an idea that I wouldn't have to tile the entire wall...just part of it. Like just the area shaded out in the last picture:

What do you guys think of that?

I like the idea of tiling just a portion of the wall but it is a lot of work. I'm really not a huge fan of the tree or other wall decal idea. I just feel like it's belongs in a bedroom since it kind of looks childish in a sense but again, just my opinion. Could you put a large shelf up on that wall and style it with larger pottery pieces and such. Then you could put a few pictures under the shelf to help take up the space.

My Blog:Through My Eyes
I do agree you need to do something... I have a friend with walls similar style to yours (and our house is laid out somewhat the same). She picked 4 colors for the house (sand/ocean theme) so she had two blues and two sand type colors and they alternated walls.
We have a much smaller space and we are doing a 2 walls of sage green (not yellowy but a nice green) and three shades of blue depending on if it's a main wall, accent wall, or hallway/foyer that is dark.
Personally I think the walls in our house are way too large (H bought the house years ago). I have framed nature pictures that look like windows. What I would do is get some snapfish/groupon cupons- find 3 photos that you (or someone you know) took with a high-res camera like ocean views or something, print them at about 20x30ish or larger portrait on canvas (it makes a total difference) with a wood frame and use some molding that matches your house to "frame" them.
Also if you know photoshop you can pick a picture you really love and split it into 3 and print it in 3 separate sections to look like the same landscape. Since it will be up high it does not have to be as sharp. I have printed mine from 35mm film up to 24x36 on canvas.
Look at photos like these... these are all mine so they are not professional or anything: https://plus.google.com/photos/106936715046375205993/albums/5786240811584280497?authkey=CIbC6-HZ6LmOXQ
I do like your idea of painting part of the wall too.
Good luck.
I like the idea of a collage with larger pictures (the small pictures were pretty, but I don't think its worth losing your sanity over).
Maybe add pictures over the years so that it can chronicle your marriage, kids (if you have them), etc? You could do the same thing with prints also; this would be a good way to add a lot of color. I'm not a big fan of the wallpaper thing in the living room
Either way, I'd start small; that's a big undertaking. I have tall ceilings in my house also, so I understand your frustration. I'm leaning towards the gallery wall route, but I won't be doing it all at the same time.
Btw, I got the duvet cover you showed me months ago in soot (the blue was actually discontinued!).
Gah, I'm still undecided. Which is why it's been empty for over a year and a half now, haha.
Our West Elm duvet is over 2 years old now, we wash it all the time, and it still looks great! I'll definitely buy another one from there when I want to change it =]
