Guest Bedroom?

Sam's post got me thinking about our guest bedroom. I have absolutely no idea what to do with that room! Right now, it just stores all of our stuff that we've been using to work on the house as well as H army stuff. We live in Northern Michigan so I thought it would be kind of interesting to have a 'Michigan Room'. Keep it more natural with wood finishes and pictures from N. Michigan. We're just going to have a bed, desk and dresser in the room so nothing too fancy. I found this idea and think it would be cool for an accent wall to put the bed against:

My question for you ladies is, what color would I paint the rest of the room? The main living space in our home (living room, entry way, & kitchen) are a warm caramel color with an olive accent wall and I don't really want to repeat those colors again but I don't know what else to do. You ladies are always so helpful when it comes to this sort of stuff so I thought that I would ask :)

Re: Guest Bedroom?

  • I'll start out by stating that I have an obvious preference for cool colors (blues, purples, etc.) over warm colors (reds, browns, oranges, etc.), so keep that in mind =]

I feel like the wood accent wall is going to be somewhat dark (at least compared to a painted wall) so I'd keep the other walls a lighter color.  I think "Northern Michigan" is a very broad theme, but going with my natural preference for cool colors and your recent dress photos taken at Lake Michigan...what about a Northern Michigan themed room but focusing more on a rustic Lake Michigan, semi-nautical type theme?  You know, like small beachside rustic cabin nestled in the dunes/natural grasses, etc - a summer beachhouse type feel.  I'm picturing like the wood wall, light blue walls, white bedding, a photo from your rock the dress pictures, some more nature pictures from around Northern Michigan.  Maybe accents furniture accents like these:

It wouldn't have to be 100% rustic lake themed, other accents that are more woodsy (pinecones, etc.) would fit in well also, I think.

Anyways, just an idea.  Maybe not 100% in the direction you were thinking, but I saw the wall and thought it might be nice together =]  And course I'm just not a fan of the red/cream/drab green/brown combo at all, and you tend to see that in a lot of "outdoorsy" type rooms.  I also think that the wood wall is very masculine, and going with a cool color on the walls will bring some feminine balance to the room.

  • Our guest room is a pale yellow and I have a quilt from amish country on it with yellows, greens and blues.  It's neutral b/c we intend to convert it into a nursery and have no intention of finding out what the sex of our non existent child is.
