I am in tears

You all know I have two rabbits. My cute little guy Harry and my new one, the Flemish Giant, Melody. I love them to pieces!

Luke, my youngest son is allergic to rabbits, but the buns are in our sunroom and do not come into the house. I felt that this was safe. Luke continues having some sinus issues but I was sure, this wasn't related, considering he is not around the rabbits.

Well, earlier I took Harry outside and I had a lot of fur on me. Luke leaned on me and I told him not to so he wouldn't get bunny hair on him. Not even 5 minutes later he started to feel bad. Within 30 minutes he was horribly stuffy, his eyes were watering like crazy and swelling up and he felt really bad. I had no idea that he could have a reaction this bad to the rabbit hair. But now seeing this, I worry that there is enough left on me, no matter how careful I am, to affect his health.

I kills me to even think about giving the rabbits away but I can not let my child suffer. He has already gone through one sinus surgery and the doctor wants him to do another CT scan. And now I think this all could be cured if all allergens were removed.

I want to scream, I am so upset.

Re: I am in tears

  • You cannot remove all allergens. It's absolutely impossible. Is he on any antihistamines? Has his doctor mentioned starting immunotherapy (shots) for him? If the buns are in the sunroom and he does not go in there and they don't come in the rest of the house I think you are fine. After handling them make sure to change your clothes and wash your hands thoroughly. But getting rid of them is not going to cure him. He is likely allergic to a lot more than just the rabbits. I know for me my environmental allergies kicked into high gear the last few days. I am sure the same is happening to him and yes the direct contact with the hair irritated that. The same thing happens with me and my dogs. Hope the little guy feels better soon and try to not be so hard on yourself. I am certain he wouldn't be magically better if the buns were gone.
  • Just wanted to add, if he has the rabbit allergy going on he is most likely sensitive to other environmental stuff as well and my allergies are driving me NUTS this past week. I agree with Mary, I would try to control it by keeping them in the sunroom and keeping Luke out of there, vacuum regularly with a good HEPA vacuum, and doing things like changing your shirt after handling the rabbits, etc. I hope you can figure something out, I know you love those bunnies!

  • how frustrating...

one idea, what about a smock or rain coat or something that you can put on as you go in with the rabbits, and take off and leave in the room?
