Being laid off

I was told in May, that I was being laid off from my job in September.  The specific time was September 14th.  I have worked consistently through these last few months, and am aiming to get my severance.  I know we have to work our last day to get our severance.  When some temporary workers got laid off 4-6 weeks ago, they worked a half day and I believe still got their severance.  I have a mandatory substitute training on Friday from 8-10 Am.  Unfortunately since we are working first shift now, it cuts into my hours.  The earliest I would be able to get out to work is 11, unless they let us out of orientation early.  I have vacation hours to comp my missed hours, but I'm afraid I won't get my severance for missing some hours.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  I will be talking to my supervisor tomorrow, but I want to attempt to ease my concerns now.  TIA!

Re: Being laid off

  • I was laid off but didn't get severance. But I do agree with your post of talking to your supervisors to get clarity.

  • My husband's company just closed a warehouse - and gave 10 months notice.  He finally landed a job - but was asked to start 2 days before the final day at the warehouse.  He spoke to his boss, and she told him to use his sick time to call out - that way he wasn't jilting them the standard 2 weeks (aka quitting) so he would still get paid out his vacation time.  (He didn't have a severance package.)  His company was very helpful in working with folks to make sure their resumes were top notch, etc.

I'm sure they will be okay with you using your vacation hours.

  • Thanks ladies!  My company has been very helpful with workshops for unemployment and resume editing.  She told me to take a vacation day, and said the severance wouldn't be effected.
