Octoberfest

We are planning an Octoberfest party at the new house!  I need menu ideas for the "theme".  I'm sure everyone (well most) will offer to bring stuff so I need to know what to ask for.  I was also thinking of getting a keg of German Beer - can you even get that or should I go with several different kinds of German Beer (although I'm sure that can get quite expensive).  Thanks for any ideas/opinions - decoration ideas are also welcome!!

Re: Octoberfest

  • That sounds fun! One thing that popped to my head was soft pretzels with different dipping sauces (there's a place in Oakland if you'd want to order them) and maybe mini cream puffs for dessert. Are you on Pinterest? I'd try them for decor and other recipes! Good luck:)
  • Soft pretzels, homemade applesauce, potato pancakes (although, these are better served right after being made), german potato salad, snickerdoodles

  • Bratwurst.

As for beer, I would probably get a few cases of some of the different brands of Oktoberfest brews like Sam Adams or other fall sampler packs.  But then we don't usually have big enough parties to drink a whole keg of anything.  (We usually like Magic Hat, Smutty Nose, Troges, Sam Adams samplers)

  • I agree with Amanda about getting a couple cases of fall samplers, although dh's friends are a bunch of drunks and we do go through a keg. Sam Adam's, Penn Brewery, Troeg's, Weyerbacher, Southern Tier, Victory, Stoudt's, HaufBrau all have Octoberfest beers. You could always do the old standby of Hacker Pschorr or Spaten if you go with a keg.

  • Ya we would need lots of cases - would you be offended if you were asked to bring a 6 or 12 pack of your favorite German beer to share?  I would need to word it in the invitation somehow and of course the people who I know are bringing food I would not ask them to bring beer.  Maybe we could even do a beer tasting contest.  I would definately loose that one.

Well I wouldn't but we usually bring beer to beer friendly houses when we go for dinner. And if we are invited to a party and were not asked to bring food we typically take a 6pack as a kind of hostess gift (if they are beer people).  Also, I see nothing wrong with getting a couple special beers and then a bunch of cheaper beer to fill in for the masses.  Some beer drinkers don't like the specialty beer (and those beers have higher alcohol content- sometimes triple that in a normal domestic light beer) I guess part of that is just knowing your guest list!

As for wording, I think it can easily be done with a Come and join us for an Oktoberfest feast! Bring your favorite brew to share and we will provide the food.  Or something like that.

  • I would definitely say bring your favorite 6 pack of fall/Octoberfest beer. It is a lot easier now with GE selling six packs. I wouldn't be offended at all. I would actually prefer it to making food to be honest.
