Recent Trip to England?

I know a Philly Nestie just went to England for vaca over the past month or two.  Anyone recall who it was?  I have a question about electrical adapters / converters. TIA!

Did you bring any electrical items? The adapter bit seems easy enough, but it's the converter that's tricky.  Looks like I need a step down converter.  Can you recommend what you used?

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to be much help. I've brought electrical items in the past (and used adaptors/converters) and they've all shorted out (is that the word?) or only worked for a few hours and then broke. I don't know what we were doing wrong! Maybe someone else on here will have a recommendation.

Are you staying in a hotel? If so, you can probably ask for a hair dryer. For cameras, I brought an extra battery. For other stuff (esp my kindle) I brought the USB charger. Car chargers also worked well for things.

  • Ugh! Not what I wanted to hear, haha!  the last time I was in Scotland, for my 18th birthday, I  blew out my hairdryer within a day.  That was 12 years ago, and now we're going back for my 30th...I was hoping things had improved.

I'm not going to mess with the converters then; however, a few of my items are dual voltage - have you had any luck with them? I'm most worried about both of our iPhones and iPads.  The cords say dual voltage, so in theory, all we need is an adapter. It would REALLY suck to blow them up.  Where did you plug your USB charger into?

  • You might want to look on the tripadvisor message boards or even ask at the Apple store about charging your phone abroad. They would be able to tell you more!

I don't know about dual voltage...we blew out 2 baby monitors but I bet they were only set to the U.S. voltage.

For USBs we'd use our family's computers (again probably not helpful to you but there may be a computer in your hotel you could use to "top off" your phones a little each day).

  • Hair dryers use a lot of juice which is why they so often cause a problem.

We used a standard worldwide adapter with our iPad and camera charger in England (and on our long trip in various other countries) and never had a problem with it anywhere.

I would ditch the hair dryer, but you'll be just fine with the iPad and camera charger.

    Enjoy!
