3 weeks in Europe..

End of November to December the hubby and I are going to Europe. We haven't booked anything yet. We've got 3 weeks and we can't decide if we should take it easy in one place like Paris or try and see as much as we can in that time. Also, can't decide how to travel...book hotels ahead of time or as we go.

Those of you who have been or have considered it... what would you do with 10k, 3 weeks and a desire to see Europe. Where would you go? How would you travel?

Re: 3 weeks in Europe..

  • I would spend 3 weeks in Italy...starting in the north and ending in the south. I would get a train pass and travel by train,.

  • Dh and I split 19 nights in Italy. 4 nights Florence, week in Radda in chianti exploring Tuscany and a week in sicily. Awesome time!!
Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • I would drive the romantic road in germany and his up a bunch of christmas markets
  • I would split it up between a few places.  Maybe Italy and France.  I like the suggestion of traveling through Italy.  The north is completely different from the south.  As for preplanning, I tend to like to book ahead because booking as you go stresses me out.  Def research and plan how to travel b/w destinations.

  • We jsut did two weeks in Italy and I blogged about it extensively- check it out here.  There are two weeks worth or entries including reviews for Venice, Rome, Florence, Chianti, and the Cinque Terre.

  • I would do a river cruise, and at that time of year I'd look into one that has a focus on Christmas markets.

Otherwise, with three weeks I would choose two areas I really wanted to explore and divide my time accordingly. What places you choose is really a matter of personal choice and interests.

How I travel depends on where I'm going. I love overnight trains and ferries, but sometimes a flight just makes more sense.

  • I would see a few places.  I'd do a week in Paris (because it's amazing and you can definately fill the time) and then the rest of the time in Italy.  The perks to not booking in advance is  you can usually score good deals on places looking to fill rooms at the last minute.  It's also the slow season for most of Europe, so you probably wouldn't have trouble finding accomodations in desireable locations.

  • France and Italy are definitely at the top of my list. I've had friends try to talk me out of Italy because of the weather and time of year we'd be going...

I love the idea of trains because you can see the country side as you travel. But  I also don't want to spend half my vacation on a train as I know it can take hours n hours n hours to reach your destination.

I also thought if I don't book hotels ahead of time I would likely be ripped off instead of finding a deal as they would know I am definitely in need of a room last minute (or so my travel agent friend said).

  • have you actually checked on what the temps in the areas of italy are during that time of year? because i was in rome in january and it is int he high 50s during the day. florence is high 40s/low 50s. you're not going to the beach. i'll never ever go during high season (may-aug) because in the dead of winter it's absoltuely empty!! this was my 2nd time in rome and 3rd in florence in 3.5 years. 've also been late sept/early oct and the weathers gorgeous.

  • No I hadn't checked the weather Tongue Tied I just assumed when I heard from my friends who have traveled there. Fahrenheit means nothing to me, but I will look at the weather now! Thank you for the idea.
  • My husband and I did a whirlwind 11 days in three cities for our honeymoon... Paris Sunday- Wednesday, train to Bruge stayed there Wednesday Afternoon through Saturday morning, Train to London Sat-Tuesday.

Hitting three cities was alot but it def kept it really exciting and forced us to focus on the big stuff..we worked in 1 day agenda-free per city.

if you can go to brugge do it!  it was our favorite spot!  PM for some other suggestions if you want...we loved it there!  have so much fun!
