Thoughts on tiled countertops

J and I were talking about our kitchen and what we'd love to do and what we are going to be able to do to make it lovely.

Gutting it out is not an option at all right now.  If we stay with house then we'd have to gut it in a few year and move sink to a better area, maybe extend kitchen, add a bedroom above....

For now we are broke, and did i mention broke.  Ok great.  We have 3 different patterns/colors of laminate counter top.   In an effort to make it visually pleasing I wanted to swap out counter tops for uniform color counter tops. paint cabinets, put down vinyl flooring (like allure) and paint walls.   J suggested tiling the countertop.  Would that be considered "better" thank laminate?  I know it would certainly wear better.

Re: Thoughts on tiled countertops

  • I'm not a fan them. The grout lines would constantly skeeve me and would worry about breaking a tile. I'd prefer laminate. They have some really nice laminate right off the shelf in HomeDepot. We put it in our condo when we redid the kitchen and I got compliments on it all the time. People always had to touch it and ask if it was granite. It was very nice.

The things you listed can really rehab a kitchen and put the gutting bug to bed for a while. Good luck!!

  • Not a fan of grout either. Laminate is a good choice for something temporary. We are planning on extending the kitchen and changing the layout (one day!) so for now we have laminated white countertops. Not ideal but not bad either.
  • i would also be worried about cracking a tile or the grout staying dirty. we have the solid surface countertops from Lowes which is like one step above the laminate. We actually looked at laminate but couldnt agree on a color so we found a solid surface that we liked. I also get alot of compliments on it, its similar looking to granite without the shine. It wasn't overly expensive and it updated my kitchen without having to spend at ton. We left the original cabinets.  There are pics on my FB if you wanna take a peek :)

Peruvian - where did you get your white counter tops?

  • We inherited tile counter tops when we purchased our house 4 years ago.  I am not a fan at all.  The grout never gets clean, I use Clorox wipes on them all the time because I'm concerned about bacteria.  The grout is now dingy and dirty that I cannot get clean, just because it is old.  I would definitely think of an alternative.
  • can you do this on all three countertops so they are uniformly colored:

  • Nearly impossible to keep them clean because of the grout lines. Personally, I would take laminate over tile countertops

  • I have TILE and love it.  But not traditional tile... we have brown grout lines, and tile/grout has changed over the years.  We have stone tile, I love that I can put my pots down on it and never worry.  Plus its cheap.
