Pediatric dentist in East?
I know this has been asked before, but I never paid attention b/c we had a pediatric dentist already.
Lanna has 7 cavities and an absess tooth that needs to be extracted. Our dentist is recommending sedating her to take care of it all at once, sometime next month.
I want to get a second opinion, and to also discuss in general wether or not it is normal for a child who goes to the dentist every 6 months to end up with such an extensive amount of tooth decay, particularly the one that has to come out. Our current (former?) dentist is someone who my DH knows personally. I like him, and I realize that some people are just more prone to cavities (and I am vigilant about her dental care b/c DH has bad teeth), but I just don't understand how the decay in her one tooth wasn't noticed the last time we were there. She had a filling, so it's not like they weren't already working on her teeth. In addition, this place seems to be expensive. Despite the fact that we have insurance, it's going to cost us around $400 to have all of the work done that he's recommending. DH and I have the same insurance and don't normally pay OOP for dental work.
I'm also nervous about the in-office sedation. Has anyone's child had to have dental sedation before? Is that typically done in office, or do some dentists do it at the hospital?

this is who I took DD too in March. It was her first appt and we really liked them. I can't find the doc we had. She was a female. Her husband works there also. Hope that helps. Poor kiddo.
If you're willing to come a little further, we see Dr Elson in McKeesport. He's really great with the kids. Noah hasn't had any "work" done, but did have his molars sealed as precaution. They have what they call a "dream machine" that they put the kids on for work (I guess it's like laughing gas). Noah was on the dream machine for the sealing, it took about 15 minutes and within 3 minutes of them turning off the gas, he was fine. Good luck!

I dont have any recs for a dentist--but I was recently talking to a friend who's 4 year old son had 5 cavities and had to get several root canals! I'd never heard of a kid getting a root canal or having that many cavaties at once. He's also just had his teeth checked a few months earlier with no problems.
She got several opinions and was told that some kids just have very soft teeth. And eating anything like fruit snacks, raisins, cranberries really stick to the teeth and cause problems.
Also--with the soft teeth, the cavities can spread from tooth to tooth, which they don't typically do in adult teeth.
Sorry Lanna is having to deal with this. My friend said the process for her son was very easy(he was also sedated) and was pain free after that.
Thanks, Amy. Did your friend take him somewhere around here? Supposedly they're going to put some kind of sealant on her teeth while she's under to hopefully prevent this from happening again.

Give Dr.Barry Bupp a call! He has an office in Banco in Irwin but mainly works out of his Greensburg office!! We take both kids to him. I personally went to him from 9months until 19!! I had horrible teeth when I was younger( literally crumbling out of my mouth!) and they thought I would have dentures by age 13, needless to say I have all my teeth and its thanks to him! He is very proactive in keeping what you have and improving the quality of teeth you have! We started taking the kids so young because of my background and found they have the same issue and they are very proactive in saving your kids teeth! All of the office staff are great and he does love to keep up with the kids.
No--they live in Ohio--but I think they did the sealant thing as well.
I scheduled an appt. with him, and went on Friday, and he refused to see her b/c we don't have a physical insurance card! It was the strangest thing... we haven't had a dental or a vision card for years and never had a problem. I was not pleased!
My SIL said something along the same line when she called to schedule an appt for her daughter, something about insurance. I think they took at copy of my dental insurance card.
I wanted to take my son to Dr. Pechersky as he came highly recommended from 2 different dental hygienists that I know, but he didn't take my insurance.
Perchersky takes ours, so good to know!
