Hey ladies! So I'm thinking of starting up a wedding consultant business. I want to be a SAHM and would like to work from home. I do understand that I will need some child care while planning a bride's wedding (thank goodness for my mom!). I'm in the beginning phase of this and want to see who else has gone this route.
For those who are wedding/event consultants:
1. Did you need certification?
2. How difficult was your start up?
3. Did you buy any books on this? Online training?
I'm trying to get as much bang for my buck as possible. I rather not waste $600 on a silly online class if it's not necessary. I have a gazillion other questions but I don't want to overwhelm ya'll. Thanks a bunch!
Re: Wanting to start up a wedding consultant biz.
Hi - I saw your post and wanted to respond. I totally understand where you are coming from as I too wanted to be a SAHM and accidentally fell into wedding planning. I actually worked for a wedding venue for many years. Then I began working for a floral design school and started doing the flower side of weddings but I missed the planning. So not only did I strike out on my own as a wedding planner but I also still work at the school and now I TEACH event planning here at the school!
So to see if this is something you could really do as SAHM job, what area do you live in? Rural, suburban, how close to a bigger city? Could you possibly do it part-time temporarily until it takes off - could you scale down hours at your current job? How much would you have to make as a consultant to quit the other job?
Thank you so much for responding!! I don't know any wedding consultants and just want to pick someone's brain!
Hey
I live in RI too and am trying to start the same business. would you be intrested in emailing me and maybe we can chat about this together?

I just got married June 23 of this year and LOVED the planning process to the point I almost got the blues after the honeymoon when real life came back. Luckily, I had a friend getting married on short notice in July and so I was able to help her do some wedding planning as well. Throughout this process I've realized it's something I would like to consider.
Personally, I have a lot of experience on the apparel end of the wedding business as my grandmother owns a full service bridal and formalware boutique and I've been working for her on and off since I was 13. I feel my "in" to the business could very well be her business as she obviously deals with a lot of frazzled in over their heads brides and could easily refer me. From planning my own wedding I did a lot of research on florists, venues, etc. If you do have any special skills such as floral, decorating, etc that could be a huge perk where you could do some of those things yourself and save a bride money especially while your starting to make a name for yourself and trying to get the first few brides.
I think some of the online courses and certificates could be helpful. Any general business classes would also be helpful. I've talked to a few wedding planners at events and most have said they had to start out doing a few friends or family members weddings for basically nothing in order to make a portfolio of what they can do.

Unfortunately I would be okay with that. Only for the sake of our child(ren). We are currently TTC and I would rather be at home with the LO. If MH can come home and we can make the switch, that's fine by me. I'll miss him but I know us making our financial future stronger is definitely the way to go.
