QOTD - 9/17/12

How did you pick an OB/GYN?  Any specific questions you wanted answered or qualities you were looking for?

Re: QOTD - 9/17/12

  • I haven't had a gyno appt since I was 25 and I went to a place then that didn't charge me for it but the gyno I got wasn't gentle.

I need to start looking into that and get a check up, perhaps next yr, to make sure everything is working right.

I hear it is also good to have a ob-gyn when you get pregnant because not everyone takes new patients.

As for as questions or  qualites : I think I would prefer a male one because I have had both. Also, I would prefer a nurse be in the room at the time of examnation. Someone that can listen to my concerns and talk with me. Some who is gentle and not impatient, etc.

  • I had an OB until I was pregnant with Carter. Then I switched to a midwife and have been with her ever since. Our views are exactly in line and I feel really comfortable with her.

  • I just went to the same OBGYN that my mom goes to. We both really like her.  I preferred a woman.  I feel very comfortable with her.

  • I don't need an OBGYN yet, so I just have my exams done at my family doctor. She studied women's health, and really knows what she is doing. Not to mention, my SIL is her medical assistant.

  • My insurance plan gave me a list of doctor's to chose from. I just picked a female with the nicest sounding name. I was very happy with her but the last couple times that I went she's been so busy and I feel that I did not have her attention completely and that really bothered me. I was with her for 5 years but I might actually switch soon.

  • When I moved to the town I now live in about 3 years ago, I asked my now MIL and SIL. Their dr's weren't taking new patients. I did research and found out from my insurance who was taking new patients. I went to this practices web page and researched the dr's and found one I felt I would "match" well with. She is very patient and answers all my questions. At the end of my exam, she takes me into her office and goes over everything to make sure I understand everything while she writes out my Rx's.

  • I actually go to the OB/GYN who delivered my niece. I think it helps to talk to pregnant women (if you know any) about their gyno.
  • What do you mean by "I don't need an OBGYN yet."?

If you're over 18 and sexually active you should be seeing an OBGYN.

  • Went with recommendation from friends in the area, then checked to make sure she was in network.  I love mine!  I still go to her even though she's across town.  I'm sure that will suck if I get preggo and have appointments a lot.

That was weird - TN reverted back to my first user name.  Its me Cassandra999.... I'll try to fix it sometime.

  • I chose based on reviews.  I really really like my GYN doctor and his office, but I don't want to deliver at the hospital he's affiliated with.  When we start thinking about TTC, I'm going to chose an OB based on my coworker's reviews.  I'm pretty sure I want to deliver at the hospital I work at, but even that is up in the air for now.

That confused me too, agree 100%.  I've been going to one since I was 16...

Yup. Plus, maybe it's just me, but SIL being my doctor's medical assistant would make me NOT want to go there. Holy awkward batman.

I decided and debated longer than necessary if I wanted a male or female OBGYN, decided on female, checked out my insurance and sought reccomendations from that list.
