I was hacked

I woke up this morning and my computer wasn't acting right. It kept saying that my programs were shutting down and my Norton Anti-virus wasn't working.

When I got home I got a phone call from an Indian guy saying that he was calling from Micorsoft because he was notified that my computer had been hacked. I felt like this could have been the hacker and I told him that he had to prove to me that he was calling from Microsoft. He had me look into my computer for the id number and he assured me that only he would know that information. Then he had me do some runs and he showed me how many files were affected by the virus.

Then he had me go a website called ammyyo.com or something like that. He had me download a program. I knew that was fishy. Just then my husband and FIL walked in and told me to hang up the phone. My FIL said the same thing happened to him and it was hackers on the phone.

I hung up and called 1-800-Microsoft. They helped me for an hour free of charge. My computer is now back to normal.

  • Thank goodness they were able to help you! How scary!
  • It was scary. I was acting close to crying. I have many, many, many files on my computer that I do not want to lose. I think I need to buy flash drives and start saving.

  • That is scary! I actually did loose all of my things at one point. I had a portable back up drive, and it died within a week of my computer. J and I got a network back up drive from his uncle for christmas the year after. I don't actually store anything on the computer anymore. Everything also gets backed up periodically on J's spare drive on his "supercomputer"

  • I'm so glad your DH and FIL walked in during that call and that you were able to get everything fixed with Microsoft!
