Started a big DIY project this weekend...

Well, maybe more time consuming than big, but either way I have a project on my hands!

I decided I wanted to tile our boring plain brown gas fireplace.  I decided on mirror tiles, but I couldn't find any online that I liked - they were all either uniform circles or squares, and I wanted something a little more organic feeling.

Well, then I got the bright idea to buy 12x12" mirror tiles from Home Depot and break them with a hammer into mirror shards.  I started yesterday afternoon, and this is as far as I've got (although I haven't been 100% dedicated time wise...).  When I'm done, I'm going to use a dark blue grout to match the rest of the living room.

Just thought I'd share my progress!  Can't wait til it's done, though...a LOT of work, taking longer than I thought it would (as do most home projects, haha.)

  • Wow, that seems like a ton of work. But it looks amazing already! I don't think I'm talented enough to ever do something like that myself. Can't wait to see when it's finished!

This! My first reaction was HOLY POOP that would take a long time...knowing me I'd give up halfway through and it would stay half done for 10 years...Props to being pro DIY!

  • Wow.. I REALLY like that! It does look like a lot of work, but I think its worth it :)

Well it is time consuming, but it's really not hard at all.  I'm pretty sure anyone could do it =]  Just scrape excess paint, sand the walls, smash mirror with a hammer, pick out the pieces you want to do, apply the mortar, and start sticking the pieces to the wall!  The great thing about mosaic is that there is no wrong way to do it.
