Foodies: Pasta help

Someone please tell me they have a tried and true orzo recipe.  I've been scanning your blogs, but I'm coming up empty (so far).  I don't really care if it's a side or an entree.  But if it's a side, what protein (and preparation of it) do you think it would be best with?

We have a shit-ton of orzo and I'd like it to be out of my pantry.  I'd prefer it go into our tummies moreso than our trashcan.

I'm hopelessly un-creative.  Help a girl out, will ya?

Re: Foodies: Pasta help

  • You could make soup and use it that way.
    Slainte!
    my read shelf:
Jenni (jenniloveselvis)'s book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • I don't really like orzo, so I'm not much help, but using it in place of arborio rice for a risotto usually works pretty well.
  • How about a breakfast scramble? Eggs and whatever veggies you have around, maybe some sausage - and cheese. Giada might have a recipe at foodnetwork.com, I know there's one in her everyday pasta book.

There's also a dissapearing zucchini orzo recipe that at animalvegetablemiracle.com from Barbara Kingsolver, but I haven't tried it.

  • I don't really have any real, formal recipes, but I generally just cook it, drizzle it with olive oil and toss it whatever I have around... like:

Tons of freshy chopped herbs works really well..basil, parsley, oregano, dill, tarragon, chives...  I think rosemary or thyme might be too woody, but just about any other would probably work.

Diced tomatoes and either feta or mozzarella

    Fresh peas

Sundried tomatoes, olives, and feta (artichoke hearts would be good too if you liked them, I don't)

And just serve with chicken or whatever.

If I make a stew or any sort of braised chicken type thing, I will cook it instead of rice sometimes.

and it is good in soups.
