French Laundry - Napa

DH and I are headed to Napa in September 2013.  He booked our rooms earlier this week - I am pumped up. Of course, I HAVE to have dinner (or maybe lunch) at French Laundry.  I am very concerned about getting a reservation especially since we will be there during crush season.  Anyone have any advice as to what works and what doesn't?  There are some forums devoted to this online and I have spent all morning studying them (Lord, I am a dork) but would like to hear from travel nesties too.

Re: French Laundry - Napa

  • Unfortunately my only advise is good luck. We had 3 people calling for over 45 minutes. By the time we got through, they were already booked for the entire night! We got on the waitlist & never got a call.

But I've also heard of some people getting in with no problem. Also, I think someone said if you have an amex with concierge, they can get you set up too? We went to Meadowood instead which was amazing if you guys don't get in. Now matter what, enjoy!

  • Alright, that is good to know. I have read that trying to call is worthless so this confirms that theory. Thank you!

((We will check out Meadowood as well))

  • We've been twice. The first we just got lucky and got through on the phone, and the second time we went with another couple so I used Open Table.  Both were on weekdays and not during crush, though, but I think being open to going for lunch will help you, too.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime.

  • Redd is also a really delicious choice in Yauntville if you don't get in to FL!
  • I was also going to say, "good luck." I live in SF and have tried 6 times now with no luck. We got on the waiting list for an ENTIRE WEEK in June and called a few times to let them know we could do any day/time. We never got the call.

But I have heard of other people just trying on multiple lines and getting through. I'd give it your all but don't count it to the point that you'll be crushed if you don't get it.

And I second that Redd is amazing and a great alternative (that's where we went instead for our 5 year anniversary dinner!). Also if you are looking to do something fun beyond the usual wine tastings, I highly recommend the vineyard tasting (out in the vines) at Silverado, horseback riding at Chalk Hill, or the sunset tasting at Round Pond.
