Todd has been in underwear since April. He is still having pee accidents. Often, he just pees a little in his pants and then goes to use the potty. As though peeing is the cue to go to the bathroom. He knows how to read his cues, but he often puts it off until the last possible moment and then peeing shows him that he really has to go now.
He does a potty dance. And yet he will refuse to go until it is too late. I've tried taking him to the bathroom anyway and it devolves into a tantrum.
Is it worth doing a reward chart for dry pants? Or this too shall pass? I think this is mostly about him being three and asserting his independence...but I am tired of having to do laundry earlier than usual because he's almost out of clean underwear.

Re: Dealing with 3 yo who doesn't mind wet pants...
Buy more undies :-)
Brinley went through a period where she had accidents on the rug in front of the toilet. Mostly because she just waited too long to make the run to the bathroom. I think she was testing her own limits with how long she could hold it--which I thought was good practice for when she may need to hold it for some reason.
It started 6-8 months after she was potty trained. I think this lasted for about 3 weeks, maybe a little longer. It resolved with no intervention from me.
Dd was like that after she had been PTed for a little bit. We ended up having to go back to diapers because she didn't care if she had accidents. We had to wait till she was ready to do it again on her own terms. It was really just a power struggle for her and having control so we backed off and 2 months later she was back to being PTed.
but sounds like he isn't that bad! Dd goes through these phases of having little per accidents and waiting till last possible second. We did do a reward chart for staying dry all day. It worked well at the time. But she has these phases here and there. Usually it happens because of change at daycare (moving rooms or teachers switching)
Is he motivated by which underwear he gets to wear? Mine has strong opinions. If I said we needed to put his favorite undies away for a while so they don't get ruined and he was stuck in the ones he doesn't like, he would probably work to get them back. He still talks sadly about the Green Lantern undies that were thrown out after a #2 accident and it was months ago!
