Packing help please

H and I will be heading on our first cruise in a week! WooHoo! We have our clothing and shoes set aside already. Is there anything that we will need or strong chance we may need that we may not think of?

Hair dryer? I heard duct tape is handy, is it? Shampoo? What should we pack?

Re: Packing help please

  • Have fun! Where are you going on your cruise? We went on Celebrity Solstice back in February, and if I remember correctly, there was a small hair dryer in the room. DH and I packed so many clothes for the cruise. We were gone for 7 nights. We ate in the dining room each night, so we had all of our nicer clothes (plus clothes for the 2 formal nights). Then we had all of our excursion/relaxing clothes. However, we did wear the jeans/pants for dinner more than 1 night. I always bring my own shampoo/conditioner/soap when I go on vacation. I don't think I brought anything special on the cruise that I wouldn't have brought with me for beach vacation.

Hair dryer? no I heard duct tape is handy, is it? for what?! no. Shampoo? no. What should we pack? the ship has shampoo, hairdryer etc..

dont forget a light sweater for dinner and being on the ship-it can be chilly in the AC.

    which islands are you visiting?

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:

  • Here's my packing list based on an 8-day Caribbean.  Amend as needed.

Also, I always overpack - bad habit.  I tend to add more than what is on this list.

    Have fun!

ETA: I never rely on the shampoo and conditioner that is already there for you so I always bring my own.

agreed.  don't get caught up in the cruise critic forums - people who bring over the door shoe organizers and 4 extension cords are a little nutty in my book.  i was on a carnival ship recently, the hairdryer was a crazy archaic looking contraption and took me 3x as long to dry my hair.

we always bring a nalgene bottle - nice to fill up before you head out to port.  and we embark with the max amount of alcohol the ship allows.  and we usually disembark immediately, go buy more, and return to the ship.  we like wine :)

I can't imagine how much crap people tote along with them to require an over the door shoe organizer. I can fit all of the toiletries i need in a ziplock bag!! maybe that' sjust me though--eyeliner, mascara, lip gloss. that's it!!   i was on a carnival ship recently, the hairdryer was a crazy archaic looking contraption and took me 3x as long to dry my hair.    I agree. They could be better BUT since it still only takes abou 10 minutes to dry my hair with the ones that are on the ship i deal with it-it's preciuos suitcase space that i fill with something else---or a souvenier. Also since we book balcony staterooms i stand outside and dry my hair with the wind for a while. Then again my hair is almost no maintenance-no curlers, irons, special serums etc... just dry, brush and go.

  • I like to have a couple of ziplock bags.  It's nice if you have to throw a wet suit in your suitcase on the last day.  I also like to put things that need to stay dry in a ziplock bag if I'm going to the beach or on an excursion with water.

We packed a small digital alarm clock that we both appreciated.  I know you have phones with alarms, but it is definitely nice to have the clock to quickly look at in the middle of the night.  Your room likely will not have any clock whatsoever.

I don't think that you need extension cords or anything like that, but we do take one of the surge protectors that turn one outlet into a plug for 6 items.  Many times the room will only have one outlet.  It's nice to be able to plug in 2 phone chargers, the digital clock, kindle charger, hair dryer, etc.

  • Thank you, thank you!

This is really helpful. I don't think we packed to much in the way of cloths since all his things will fit into a duffle carry on and mine into a rolling carry on with room to spare for toiletries and shoes.

I'll be sure to add ziplock baggies, garbage bag, beach bag and I forgot to set aside sweaters for us. I did set aside a pashmina for me already.

I plan to buy some of our disposable toiletries at the port city to save that tiny bit of room. We'll just toss what is left before we head home.

Thank you for the list JenM. It was helpful and I would have forgotten to pack Tylenol, Tums, etc. since they are not in our daily routine like vitamins.

We'll be staying a couple of nights in Miami and going on a short cruise to Key West, Nassau and RCI's private Island.

We've done this cruise before and had a great time.  Their private island was very impressive, we've been there a few times - it is beautiful.  Make sure not to just plop your stuff down on the first chair you see - walk over the right for a while - it's really gorgeous.

Well this is good to hear! Thanks. I'll be sure to drag my H down the beach to find the perfect spot.
