Garage Cabinets: Toss or Keep?

Hi Everybody. I heard about The Nest from a friend. So hi!!

I was hoping you could settle a debate that my parents are having.

They are preparing their home for sale...repairs, touch-ups, fresh paint, removing dated wallpaper, etc.

Many years ago, they did a kitchen renovation and the cabinets that were removed got reinstalled into their two car attached garage as bonus outdoor storage space.

Those cabinets are dated (early/mid 1980's) but are in good condition and obviously provide ample amounts of garage storage. They are those white formica material with the base of the doors covered with a wooden trim that doubles as the way to open the cabinet.

Anyway, the home has ample storage elsewhere with the other closets and cabinets throughout the property. So, if these got removed, there would still be tons of storage in other places, although not any outside.

The debate: One parent wants to get rid of the garage cabinetry and the other wants to keep it as they clean out and repaint the garage interior.

So, what do you all think? And, I will be sharing your thoughts with them. Big Smile

Keep them. Cabinet removal is an easy DIY job for any new owner who does not want them. I LOVE garage storage of any kind and closed storage is best IMO.

If the cabinets are ratty looking - a fresh coat of paint (on the body and wood trim) would make them more attractive.

I agree with the keeping them. No matter how much storage you have elsewhere, having extra storage in the garage is great for things like oil, paint, tools, etc that you don't want to keep in the house an having closed storage is awesome because it hides it. Unless they look really horrible (and not because they are dated but more if they are falling apart and broken) I would freshen them up and keep them.

Definitely keep. I am always complaining about not having enough storage. Like everyone else said I'd just give them a new paint job so they show better when they put the house on the market.

Keep! One thing we loved about the house we just bought was all the storage, including a storage room downstairs with lots of shelves and the built-in storage located in the garage.

As a guy, I'd say as long as they're in decent shape (ie. structurally sound and not falling apart) and not blocking being able to drive a car into the garage, I'd say leave them. Paint them if you want as long as you can do it without them looking horrible.

Keep them. If the lowers are there too they make a great work bench. DH was so excited to see cabinets in the garage while we were looking for a house.
