Philly nestie dropping in with a question

Hi Ladies,

I've posted my question on the Philly board but I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask here as well-I'd post on the central PA board but that place is d-e-a-d!

My husband lives and works in Ohio and I'm in Philly. He typically comes home every other weekend but we've decided we'll "meet in the middle" this coming weekend so I'm looking for recommendations on where to go. According to my searches on the internet, Bedford, PA would be around the middle point with both of us driving between 4-5 hours. We're not looking for an expensive hotel, any holiday inn will do, but it would be nice if the town offered some activities (walking trails, museums, restaurants, apple picking) really anything besides hanging out in the hotel the whole time.

TIA!

-NQ

PS - If you ever have any Philly questions, we're always happy to help!

  • I realize you don't want to stay at the Bedford Springs resort but here is a link from their website to activities in the area. There is definitely cheaper accomodations in the area.

  • Thanks! I had come up with that town from a website that calculates middle points of traveling. I didn't realize it actually has so much to offer since I've never been out that way.

Also, your dogs are adorable. The one on the right has this look on his face of "I can do no wrong". Love it!

The resort re-opened a few years ago, and brought some more attention to the area.

Thanks! He is a giant goofball.

  • Not sure if it is included in the list, but Old Bedford Village is also out there.  I remember going with my dad YEARS ago (like when I was 4) when he had a business trip out there.  Here's the website!

Cute. It looks like Old Sturbridge Village in Mass. We'd go there for field trips in grade school.

  • There is a very nice Hampton Inn right at that exit off of the turnpike.  Old Bedford Village is fun and there a few decent restaurants in the area.  If you want a very nice restaurant.  I would go to Bedford Springs.  There is also hiking at Bedford Springs and a spa.

  • Bedford is decent...Bedford Springs has nice activities even if you don't want to stay there.

I know there are other hotels nearby as well. There should be a really nice fall festival coming up that would have fun activities in the next few weeks.

Bedford is gorgeous and one of my favorite places.

If you are going this weekend, though, you will be just missing the festival!  It is the first two full weekends of October.  It is very fun but can be a little stressful with all of the closed streets/crowds.

A place DH and I were looking into for a little getaway was Berkeley Springs, WV.  They have many cute cabins to rent (we were looking at the two cabins here: http://www.crosscreekcabinrental.com/id10.html).  I know it's a little late for this weekend, but in the future, it's definitely a nice place.  The woman who rents these seemed really nice when I interacted with her.  We just couldn't rent Sleepy Spring for the weekend we wanted because it required a 3-night stay that specific holiday weekend.

  • Bedford is a nice little town. There aren't a ton of things to do, but it's quaint. My parents lived there for years before I was born and we used to go camping up there regularly when I was a kid. Old Bedford Villiage is a good suggestion. They had a nice fall festival there years ago, and I assume they still do it, if you like that kind of thing (I do, DH just goes along with it)!

This place is perfect. I'll keep it in mind for future trips! Thanks.

  • I just wanted to thank everyone once more. We ended up booking at a chain hotel in Somerset and are going to go to Fallingwater on Saturday, I totally forgot that was out that way, and spend Sunday checking out Bedford before parting ways again. We'll plan the next trip more in advance so we utilize some of your other suggestions!

  • Another weekend you could also do something out in the Laurel Highlands area (a couple of exits closer to PGH than Sommerset). We stayed here for our wedding and they have some good suggestions for things to do in that area on their site.

    This winery is very good:

  • Check out Ohiopyle: nice hiking and biking trails and white water rafting if you are feeling adventerous. If you want more Frank there is also Kentuck Knob that isn't too far.  Ligonier is a cute, quaint town that isn't too far from Somerset.  If you google Laurel Highlands you will get lots of local attractions.
