I have to have a root canal :-(
I had several molars break when I was pregnant with Nolan--but they weren't painful and I didn't have dental coverage. I went to the dentist yesterday and I need 2 crowns and one of the teeth needs a root canal. I'm terrified!
Someone please tell me it's not that bad. the dentist said that it's likely the nerve is already dead because I'm not having any pain.

Ugh--novicane. I'm also terrified of needles, so I had all of my current fillings done with out novicane.
your doc may be able to give you an RX for something to calm you down a bit. I am not afraid of the needles though. I just hate the feeling of the novicane (especially when it numbs out my nose)

I was terrified before mine, but it's not that bad! I had a root canal in one visit and the doctor was really great throughout the procedure. He kept asking me if I was okay the entire time. I saw Dr. Wateska in Southpointe.
I have TMJ, so instead of them putting something in my mouth to hold it open, they used blocks that I bit down on instead. I had almost no jaw pain afterward.
Are you okay with needles if you never see them or is it even the thought that they will be using a needle that you hate? I don't think I'd want to do a root canal without Novocaine!
ditto Amanda. I had a dentist phobia and didn't go for a few years. When I went again I needed like 7 fillings and a crown. I specifically went to a dentist that did sedation dentistry. First they really understood the fear and made me feel so comfortable and second they were very willing to give me meds to have the work done. I had never had novacaine before either (terrified as well).
For my first appr for the crown she gave me a script for Valium. 1 pill before bed and 1 in the morning right before the appt. it helped me not stress so much beforehand. The appt wasn't too bad. That was the only appt I needed the drugs. Since then I've had many fillings and novacaine and I'm not nearly as nervous. My dr uses a numbing gel first before the novacaine so it's not too bad.
oh and I found it helpful to bring my iPod and listen to music during. I even had a specific dentist playlist because I had to go so much!
