Talk to me about trip insurance

We've travelled a lot but have never bought trip insurance- we always figured we would just take the hit in cancellation fees if we ever needed to change something. For our trip to South Africa in a couple months we want to get trip insurance in case we have a newborn or if we get a call while we're there and need to come home early. There's much more of a chance of having to change travel plans for this trip than we have for any of our past trips. Anyone have recommendations for trip insurance companies? What do I need to look for? Do you usually get insurance for the trip as a whole or for each piece individually (flights, tours, etc.)? I just don't really know where to start! Thanks!

  • Insuremytrip.com

Read and understand all terms, limits, exclusions and conditions--like any insurance.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • American Express has a pretty good plan.  I can't remember all of the details but there are several options.

  • I always get travel insurance--even if I'm not traveling so far. There are just too many variables. I do try to do "one stop" insurance.

You want to look for coverage that includes emergency evacuation (in case you or your spouse need to be air lifted home), in addition to trip delay/cancellation, lost/delayed baggage and general medical/dental coverage. Since you're going to South Africa, you want to make sure the company has 24 hour global assistance coverage.

    I really like: http://www.allianztravelinsurance.com/

But definitely look at the site pp suggested, as well as http://www.squaremouth.com/

Lastly- I'm going to give a general sales pitch for travel agents (not necessarily just to the op). If you haven't already booked everything for this trip, you can still get one. For anyone else- this would be the first thing I would do (and no--I'm not one, but I do work in the travel industry). Nobody thinks of them anymore because it's so easy to book travel online. But for a more complicated itinerary, a tour, something that involves more than just round trip flights, or for any "big" / "special" trip, I use a travel agent. I love researching everything on my own, but was so happy to have the help when we booked our honeymoon. They can help suggest special hotels and restaurants; they have relationships with airlines, cruise companies and tour operators and can often get better rates. They can go to bat for you when there's a delay or cancellation--so you don't have to deal with any of that. And..they can sometimes get you upgrades or other perks. =)

  • The hit on the cancellation fees isn't the problem.  You already spent that money & it's gone (But it's nice to know you may get some of it back with trip insurance.)

The better reason to get trip insurance is for the medical benefits.  Most health plans issued in the US provide no coverage for accidents outside the US.  Can you afford to run up a big bill in another country?  Depending on what happens it may cost a fortune to get home.  A cousin of mine got hurt in Russia & had to fly home immobilzed on her back.  The flight cost $19,000.00.

www dot insuremytrip dot com is a great side.  Compare a few policies..  Don't worry about who is selling the insurance look at who is issuing the policy.  You don't want coverage from some fly by night group that won't be there from you if things tgo wrong.  You want a solid carrier.
