Ideas for painting our dining room

So my now husband bought the house about 3 months before we started dating.  It has chair railing all the way around, and is lat and plaster walls (yes, its an old farm house and we are waiting to put in dry wall). When we first got together he asked if I would help him take down the crazy wall paper and paint it.  As stated before we were literally dating 2 months so I kept my opinions on colors to myself.

His mom came down for a weekend and we all three had some bonding time and got it done.  Here is the problem, He wanted the wall above the chair railing to be a deep rich brown and the wall below the chair railing to be a deep maroon.  Well  when it was all said and done the colors weren't mixed/made correctly and the colors turned out much lighter than what either one of us like.  My goal for this winter is to repaint it but I have no idea what I want to do for colors.  The room is large with off white carpeting.  We both love earth tones, and want to keep the house as a casual, country/farm house.  Any color suggestions would really help, as I'm scared I'm going to end up hating it again. TIA

Re: Ideas for painting our dining room

  • I don't know, but I would stay away from two dark colors on the walls.  To me, to make a room work with two colors and a chair rail split, one of the colors needs to be light and one needs to be dark.  So maybe a cream color with a deeper brown, or white and maroon.

  • Do you have photos? Also, when doing a split like that, I'd keep the bottom half darker than the top half.
  • I agree with the previous posters about having a mixture of light & dark paints.  What about dark brown with a light green?

  • Sorry it took me so long to come back.  I like the idea of the cream-ish with the dark brown.  I will check with the husband tonight to see what he thinks.  So do I need to use a lighter primer then on the top right?? Since right now its a medium brown?? Thanks for all the replies I really appreciate the help!
