Flu Shots

Do your kids get the flu shot?

I made the appointment to get the twins theirs because their ped said I should and some of the women I am friends with basically freaked out and said it was a bad idea because they cause all sorts of health problems.  So now I'm not so sure.

Re: Flu Shots

  • I've gotten one for the boys every year, as well as myself (even though my husband swears that we get sick more throughout the Winter because of the shot). I even asked the pediatric pulmonologist about it last week for my oldest (since he has asthma) and he definitely said to do it (and Gavin can only get the shot, not the mist). So, that's two peds, a pulmonologist and an allergist (last year) that recommended it.

I think they say no flu shots under 6 months of age - I can't remember how old your boys are, though?

  • My boys have gotten each winter they've been able (over 6 months) with no problems, and neither has gotten the flu.

They are 7 months old now.

  • We all always get one.
  • You will find people vary a lot on their vaccine opinions.  And even some people who are okay with most vaccines still don't do the flu shot.

Im pro vaccine so my opinion would be vastly different than somebody who is anti vaccine. We do the flu shot for all of us. Dd goes to daycare and has since she was 12 weeks so she is at increased risk. For us it makes sense.

  • It's all a matter of opinion.  My kids are generally healthy and we don't get the flu shot.  Knock on wood, we haven't had the flu in our house either.  They go to daycare too.

I think flu shots are hit and miss.

  • yes, EJ and I both get them each year. She has already had hers.  Like Gavin, EJ has asthma. So it is even more important for her to be protected. I get them because I had the flu once. And I don't think I could risk getting it again and still be able to parent.  It wiped me out for a good two weeks. I can't say we get more colds due to having the flu shot each year. I think we get more colds because we live with a 5 year old.

Ditto.  I always got them since I started working with college kids years ago, and once I got pregnant with Jake, I harassed Brian until he started getting them, too.  Stick out tongue

A big ditto to this!   Of course we still get colds and stomach bugs, but I had the actual flu one year and I think I was on sudafed for 3 weeks.  When I finally went back to work, I broke out in a sweat just walking up the one flight of stairs to my office I was so weak.  It was horrible.

This totally. Between having a kid in daycare, my working with college kids and taking public transportation - we all get the flu shot!
  • DD has always gotten the flu shot, since she's been old enough to. (She gets the mist now.) I get them most years (I missed last year), but DH doesn't get them at all. I've urged him to do it, but he just chooses not to.

  • C got the flu shot last year (first dose at 7 months) and she will get it again this year.  She actually goes next week.

I don't.  I did when I was pregnant and that was the only time.  D does though.  I just had a terrible reaction the time I got it, so since my family is protected, I forego it.

  • Thanks for the input I feel much better now about it.
