Popcorn ceiling, asbestos, and tears
So I started painting my ceiling and the popcorn material rolled right off with it, so we started scraping it off. Later we found out it could contain asbestos. We brought it to get tested and sure enough it tested positive for 10% chrysotile asbestos. We wore masks for 75% of the scraping time, used tarps over 75% of floor, furniture. I vaccuumed the dust around the edge of the tarps with our new Dyson. The door was closed mostly, except when I went downstairs to google it and when DH went into the bedroom to retrieve a fan to put in the window of this room. I have an asbestos abatement company coming in an hour to give me a free estimate. But does anyone have experience with this in their home? Every room in this 4 bedroom house is this popcorn ceiling except one bedroom and a hallway, which leads to me to suspect the old owners must have known if they redid those two ceilings. But my state is more buy beware. They are only required to disclose if they know if lead paint is in the house. So I don't think we have any recourse. We had a home inspection but asbestos was an extra inspection that we chose not to do. (Please spare me the "You should have had it tested," I'm beating myself up more than most.) Just looking for people who had it in their house, what they did, and did they ever feel safe in their home again. We do not have the money to have it removed from every room so some people have advised covering and sealing it with sheetrock. I know it's only harmful if it's disturbed, but it is on top of us in every room, and I feel it it is becoming disturbed by time itself. At this point, I'm not even sure I will ever be comfortable having children in this house, which is extremely sad and upsetting.
Re: Popcorn ceiling, asbestos, and tears
Wait until the asbestos people come out, and see what they have to say. Ask them lots of questions while they're there; they're the experts.
As far as repairs go, I would get the asbestos removed from the room that you've already started scraping. I personally wouldn't worry about any of the other rooms right now. It shouldn't be a big deal. Like you said, it's only a problem if it's disturbed.
Try not to worry too much. You'd be surprised how many places have asbestos in their buildings. From what I understand, asbestos tends to be a bigger problem for people who worked in harvesting asbestos.
