Exterior Painting - Front Door, Garage Door and Shutters

We live in a red brick home. We are looking to get the roof replaced and we're leaning towards a medium gray colour. The challenge is that the existing roof is brown and so is the front door, garage door and shutters. I figure that if we go with gray roofing then I will want to paint the other areas to coordinate.

Does anyone have experience painting their front door, garage door and/or shutters? Can you offer any advice? I'm wondering if this is something that I can do myself or if it would be best to hire a painter to do it.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Re: Exterior Painting - Front Door, Garage Door and Shutters

  • We are currently in the process of repainting our the exact same things.  We currently have brown shutters and have switched to a red/maroon color.  We haven't had any problems with the shutters (that is where we decided to start because H had to repaint and caulk the windows).  They are just tedious and take way longer than I thought they would, but I don't mind.  I think the front door will be pretty easy (take it off the hinges, lay it across some saw horses or other similar item, and paint). The garage will probably be our biggest challenge, but my Dad told us we should be able to put the door down one panel at a time and paint it that way.  We'll see....

We just decided we would rather have it take us some time than to pay someone else to do it.  Then we save the money and get to say we did something to our house ourselves (this is our first major project as new and first time homeowners).

  • Thanks - your response is really helpful.

I'm glad to hear that it's something that can be done yourself.  I'm okay with it taking some time as well.

Were you able to get any good recommendations for types of paints to use for exterior paint vs. interior?  If not I will ask at the local paint store but I often find it helpful to learn from other people's experiences.

  • The paint we used was a Glidden paint and primer in one.  The color we picked though was from the Behr collection.  Thankfully Home Depot can take any color chip and make that color in whatever paint brand.  My father recommended the Glidden because he likes it and because it is the only one at our store at least that does paint and primer in one for exterior paints.  We love the paint and haven't had any problems with it.  I will say we were extremely happy that the Home Depot worker told us the color was going to look BRIGHT PINK in the can and when first applied but would dry the red color we picked...otherwise it would have been returned as soon as we opened the can!

  • I haven't painted my garage door- but I have painted my shutters and front door.  My house is gray with white trim (garage door is white) and I painted the shutters black from white and the front door red from white.

My shutters were vinyl- so I removed, cleaned, and spray painted them- so easy and they were done and back up in a day.

My front door- is a very simple door- so I just taped off the trim around the inserted decorative window and painted it while it was still hung.  That took two days- since I needed to paint the trim first.

  • Excellent.  This is starting to feel very do-able :)
  • I painted our garage door last month.  It did not turn out so well.  I painted it the same color, I just wanted to fix the fading.

Part of the problem was because our door has that triangle pattern so it wasn't a smooth paint coat.  I think on a door that has a smooth finish it would turn out better.

I used a pittsburg (I think) exterior paint that was listed as good for doors.
