Last Friday, as I was driving home, traffic came to an abrupt stop in East Greenwich on Route 4 going north. Usually it slows in that area (by Frenchtown road) because there's a lot of merging traffic. People tend to speed up until that point, sometimes by as much as 15-20mph, but between the extra traffic and cops usually lurking around there, traffic often slows to below the speed limit. This causes a decent number of accidents, and I figured that's what happened that caused the sudden halt.
After about a half mile of stop & go traffic, I see that fire trucks and police cars are covering the median and both lanes of the highway. We're down to single file line of cars passing in the breakdown lane. An ambulance comes through while I'm still pretty far from the accident (maybe 1/4 mile to go?) and at that point I know the accident must have just happened. By the time I get to passing the accident, the ambulance is gone. There were 3 cars involved. Looked like someone severely rear-ended a car, pushing it into the van in front of it. The car in the middle was a RAV-4, minor damage to the front, but the entire trunk region was crushed clear into the back seats. Looked really bad. The car that hit the RAV-4 had lots of damage to the engine compartment, but wasn't as crushed. Car in the very front was a big work van with minimal damage, comparatively speaking.
I honestly didn't think anything of it again until today, until I read about the accident in a news article.
The driver of the RAV4 was pregnant, in her 3rd trimester, and was on her normal commute home when the accident happened, just like I was. They rushed her to the hospital. The baby made it. She did not.

I can't imagine being her SO, trying to deal with her loss and the birth of a premature son on his own. It's just so sad.
You can bet your @ss I will be much more careful driving, especially in that section of road, from now on. It could have been me.
Re: Freaked out (sad story)
I just got chills.
Over the weekend I had an old classmate of mine from middle school post this one her facebook." Sully was only 23 yrs old and was in her third trimester. The unborn baby survived but he's fighting for his life"
Apparently the husband is her cousin...
I am only guessing this is the same woman as you mentioned above, since it was from Friday... I didn't get a chance to read the details on the site. In fact to be honest. I didn't even take a minute to read it because I was "too busy"..after reading what you wrote and thinking of my own friends that are pregnant etc (and you!) I felt I needed to take the 5 minutes to read the story...so after I hit "post" i will be doing just that.

Yup, that's her.
Here's a link to the summary of the story. The driver that hit her was distracted by a wallet he had dropped...
