TTC Appt. w/ New OBGYN: Q's

For my new gyno/ob. I have one where we live, but since I work an hour away and will be moving before future baby arrives I wanted to get one closer to work. My first appointment is Oct. 18th. It is with the gyno. They told me if and when I get pregnant the OB would not see me until I am 8 weeks pregnant.

This should be interesting. I think I will be ovulating the beginning of next week. I wonder if I might actually get pregnant and be able to find out on the appt on Oct 18th. Maybe you ladies who already pregnant could do the math for me. My cycle started on Sept 26. My last cycle was 30 days. Do you think it would be possible for me to be pregnant by Oct 18th. It would be cycle day 23.

I know it would be rare to be pregnant our first month trying, but it would be so nice to get two appointments done in one shot.

Thanks ladies!

Well, yes it's possible but say you ovulate on the 10th, which is cycle day 14 and you concieve. Then you would only be 8 days past ovulation on the 18th and it is very hard to tell you are pregnant at 8dop. Usually people start testing positive at 10-12dpo.

Thanks Tara! I thought it might be too soon to tell. I was just wondering because I am pretty sure they will want to do a pap-smear and all the other annual exam stuff. I just want to be sure them sticking that big q-tip thing in me wouldn't hurt a baby that could be there, but doesn't test to be there yet. If that makes any sense...

  • My doctor didn't do one but from what I've heard it can be standard to get a pap at your first ob appointment. I think it depends on how long it's been since you had one. Not sure. Just had a lot of ladies on the march mom board say they had it at their first appointment.

And you never know, might get lucky in the first month. :D

All this! It is pretty standard to have a pap when pregnant if you have not had one recently. I did not have one at my first visit because I just had mine in June. It isn't going to harm the baby at all.

My suggestion would be to start  temping or to use OPKs. Temping is the only way you will 100% know when you ovulate and OPKs will help give you a time frame of when you ovulate if you don't want to temp.

It is also pretty common for doctors to not see you until you are 8 weeks pregnant. Thats was most of the June moms are complaing about... and I dont blame them one bit! I think I just got super lucky with my doctor wanting to see me early.

Hopefully it wont take you too long to get a bun in the oven!

  • Thanks ladies! Sorry about the multiple posts. I kept having a message that said ERROR, so tried to repost. Apparently when it says ERROR it still posts. Anyway, thanks for answsering my questions. The call center for the practice told me my doctor will answer all TTC questions and more once I go to the first appointment. DH asked if he should go along, but as far as I know it will be just like an annual exam. I am glad I have you ladies to ask all my questions too.

Right now I am tracking my cycle on a chart. I wrote the days of my cycle with dates. I also am checking my CM. I am not temping right now, but may consider it for next month. Do you have to have a special thermometer? Or is the same type you use when you get sick ok?

Yes, you need a Basal Body Thermometer. You can get it at CVS, Walgreens, Amazon, etc. Just make sure it says Basal.
