Toddlers and diarrhea

Spencer has had soft stools and diarrhea off and on for the past few weeks. It seemed to have started right after she had a cold, so we chalked it up to a virus. However, the diarrhea started up again Saturday evening. She's acting completely fine except for the diarrhea. She has wet diapers and is happy and playing. She's a little fussy when it's time to eat, but that's not completely unusual. She hasn't eaten anything out of the ordinary. I plan to call the Pedi today. I'm sure I'll end up bringing her in to be looked at.

Has anyone experienced anything similiar? Is this normal? Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Toddlers and diarrhea

  • I remember DD having somehthing like this in the two year room at daycare. Same thing with no others issues. I actually sent a PM via FB to Tobi and she told me it is common in toddlers. She called it something. I think it was realted to them not absorbing all the fluids that makes it into their digestive tract. Or something like that. Not explaining exactly correct.

Put me at ease though. Hope that helps.

Thanks. That is interesting since she did just move up to the toddler room a few weeks ago. It falls into the same time frame.

  • How many poopy diapers are you getting in a day? If it is like 10 then I would be concerned that it is actual diarrhea. But if it is just one or two and are just softer than normal then I wouldn't be too concerned either.

    Hi Amanda!

It's been one or two blow outs and one or two squirts throughout the day. I called the Pedi and they said to give it until the beginning of next week but to put her on a bland diet (rice, yogurt, bananas, etc.) and to also buy Florastor which is a probiotic.

  • Eamon went through this as well - it lasted a week - 10 days and everything that went in came out.  I swear he lost a pound or two.  I think it was just the after effects of a virus (at least that's what everyone said).  Thanks for the probiotic info - will look into that as well.

  • we used florastor often when EJ was on an antibiotic. It always helped her!
