Xmas gift help, please!

I'm having a horrible time trying to figure out what to get my best friend's husband for Christmas; I should say he's my friend also.

First off, they are self-made multimillionaires which makes it sort of tricky.  He is however not pretentious, super laid-back and very social.  They have a young child and another on the way. He plays golf and cricket, but I know nothing about either sport and am pretty sure he doesn't need anything for either.

help!

Re: Xmas gift help, please!

  • I ran into similar trouble whenever getting gifts for my boss (who made ~10x as much as me).

I'd stay away from gifts that are too utilitarian; you're not going to be able to get him anything he needs.  Try to think of things that he will enjoy or will come in handy.  For example, when my boss left the law firm (before it was known I was following her), she took a trip to Asia first.  So, as a going away gift, I got her a book about shopping in Asia (she loves to shop).

Is there anything he likes to do with his kids?

    Good luck :)

  • My favorite standby gifts are dinner gift certificates (for the couple together) and booze.

What about a subscription to a magazine?  You could ask his wife if he's got a subscription to Golf Digest or anything like that.  A friend of mine just got me a subscription to Eating Well or something like that, and I'm really excited.

  • I'm a big fan of booze; the magazine subscription is a good idea too.

Ditto, I like to find out their poison of choice (vodka, gin, Bourbon, Scotch, etc) then find a little known bottle of it or something they may not have tried before.
