Savings Bonds?

Hi, in the great (and continuing) purge of Puff Back 2011, I found some savings bonds for our childhood.  What do we do with them?  J says cash them out and use towards vacation. I say roll into a cd or something like that.  Thoughts?

Re: Savings Bonds?

  • If they are done earning interest I would cash them in.  Then it's up to you to decide how to spend the money.
  • If it still can mature, I say keep them. As for what to do with them...you and J desperately NEED a getaway. Just sayin.

  • i hope they are still maturing.  Will call a bank as soon as i can.

I hear ya nik.  Our last vacation was April  2009, since then all other "vacations" involved Home Depot, Ikea or Sassafrass.

  • I agree with the previous posts. If they are gaining interest keep them. Otherwise, cash them in indulge a little and put the rest in your savings.

  • I agree with pp, if the bonds are matured, cash them in and treat yourselves since you deserve it!  But make sure to take a few dollars aside to pay taxes on them so you don't get caught scrambling in April :)
  • What year are they from?  Bonds stop earning interest after 30 years. If they are EE bonds, then they start off at half the face value an earn interest on that. So depending on how long you have had them, they might not even be worth face value yet. As for what to use them for, a vacation sounds great, but if you aren't planning on going soon, put them in a short term CD and THEN use for a vacation.
