how long is your...

commute to work?

I've mentioned before that H & I are casually starting to look at houses. Right now we live downtown and my commute is about 5 minutes. I'd like to stay in the "city" (it's a REALLY small city) or the suburbs, while H is also considering more rural areas. Rural is fine by me, I've just been spoiled by my 5 minute commute and I'm not sure how I feel about traveling 30 minutes to work.

Re: how long is your...

  • I live in a pretty small City as well... same with you, it's maybe 5 mintues and i'm here. I remember one day there was a "traffic jam", there was an accident people had to go around... and it took me 10 minutes instead of 5 haha

I came from a slightly larger city before I moved here... and there you could still get anywhere in 15-20 mintues. I wouldn't want any bigger than that.

  • Mine is 30 minutes. It use to be 5 before I moved. I was hating it at first, but I'm really ok with it now. Since I am a professor, it is kinda nice to be away from the students I see every day since they live near the school.

Downsides--there is no more "I'll just go back really quick and grab that..." It becomes a bit more challenging.

  • i used to live in Charlotte, NC and lived in the city and my commute was still 30 minutes, but only if there wasn't traffic.  i HATED it, mostly because no one in Charlotte knows how to drive. (it probably takes over an hour to get from one end of the city to the other, it's really spread out)

when we moved my requirements were that 1) we didn't have to get on the interstate to go to work and 2) it was a short commute to work.  we ended up finding an apartment that we loved that was only a 10-15 minute drive and no interstates.  i'm so happy!!

i live in Steamboat Springs now though, and it's literally about 3 miles to cross town so i'm spoiled.  we joke around about how something is AAALLLL the way across town  :-P

  • Currently my commute is only about 15 minutes and it's all back roads.

As of Nov. 1st, we'll be moving the office to another town, and my commute will be about 25-30 minutes. Its going to take some getting used to, but I think I've been pretty luck with only have a 15 min. commute for the past 5 years!++

  • I travel 25-30 minutes to work. It's really not that bad.  H commutes 40-45 minutes, he doesn't seem to mind that either.  I have commuted up to just over an hour to work, and that sucked.

  • Mine is maybe 5 min at the most. I honestly love it but I used to have to go about 30 min for work when the office was across town but it was all interstate so I didn't find it bad it went by pretty quick.
  • Mine is about 20 mins, H's is about 30.  Eventually we hope to open our own practice within 15-20 mins of our house.  It seems to me like 15-20 mins seems to be about average for people I know.

Growing up, my dad commuted 40 mins to work every day.

  • Before I moved, I had a drive that went from 25 minutes to 45 minutes depending on traffic. It was HORRIBLE. Since  we moved, my drive is 17 minutes. I hate the idea of moving farther away again.

  • We live wayyy out in the suburbs..(I used to think my parents lived far out at 40 minutes from downtown...we now live 30 minutes farther out then them!)

H works out here though so its only about 10 minutes for him to drive to work. If I get the shelter job it will be 7 minutes for me...otherwise the most realistic places for me to find work are all about 40-50 minutes away. When I was nannying it was 30 minutes away and when I go back to school it will be 50 minutes.

  • I am so jealous of everyone. I work in Bethesda, Md and live in Baltimore. My commute is about an hour each way. Really depends on how bad traffic is.

  • My commute, withOUT traffic is 40-45 minutes. Otherwise, my commute averages about an hour. Some times it's longer because people are idiots. It rains and people drive slow. It snows and people drive slow. It's sunny and people drive slow. H's commute is about 45 minuets, but he doesn't hit the traffic I do, as he heads towards Rhode Island. I drive towards Boston. So, ya, my commute sucks. I wouldn't mind 45 minutes if there was no traffic. I'm in a lot of stop and go.
  • I've had communte anywhere from 5-55 minutes.  I actually prefer what I have now, which is the 20-30 minutes-depending-on-traffic-mostly-highway commute (at my full-time job.)  My part-time job is now about 6 minutes from home.  Before I moved in with H, it was about 25-30, which wasn't fun, because with that job I either open or close the rink, and hockey practice meant I would have to be there EARLY, or I'd close and be leaving really late.

For my 8-4:30, though, I enjoy the car time.. I listen to the radio (and sing LOUDLY) which wakes me up enough to start my day :)  When I had a shorter commute, I loved sleeping in later, but I was still half-asleep when I would show up to work! haha.

  • mine varies.  I do pediatric home care and it depends on what client I am with that particular day.  One lives 3 blocks from me, one is 20 min and the other is 15 minutes.

  • It's about a 20 minute drive for me and 10 minutes for H. I live in one town and work in another so it's a pretty rural commute. That is about the typical drive time for the area I live in.

  • Mine is 15 minutes, all back roads. It's such a beautiful drive! No lights, hardly any stop signs, all farm land.

DH on the other hand is way longer, it's about 45 mins depending on traffic.

  • I live in a very small town (11,000 people) so "commuting" is not that big of a deal.  During the summer months I can get here in about 7 minutes.  When school is back in session (yup, that's our traffic jam here!) it's about 12 minutes.  Damn school kids!
  • My commute is 12 minutes now on back roads. It used to be 35-55 minutes on the highway before I moved, and I would always hit traffic... not fun
    imageAnniversary
  • 5-7 minutes depending on traffic, which can be light to none now that summer is over. When I was living in VT during grad school doing my internship at an elementary school, the commute was 30 mins. I know that isn't bad compared to some people, but I am not a morning person therefore I hated that I was sitting in my car for 30 mins on the way to work when I could still be sleeping! Plus I spent an hour in my car each day.
